Elizabeth (Acklin) Hinds' Children

Elizabeth (Acklin) Hinds' children (heirs of William Hinds listed on the military pensions) were Nancy, Samuel, Kesiah, Sarah & James Hinds.  Nancy is my presumed ancestress.

It is thought that Nancy was the same person later known as Ann (Hinds) Rice.  The 1860 Census (Saline Co., Illinois) provided a clue that there might be a relationship between the Rices, Acklins and Hinds.  Living with Ann (Hinds) Rice's daughter in Saline County, IL in 1860, was Ann's brother, Samuel Acklin Hinds.

Despite on location research at Tulane University, Washington County, Virginia, Register of Deeds, Madison County, Alabama, Franklin County, Tennessee, and elsewhere very little* corroborating evidence has been found proving that Ann and Nancy were, in fact, the same person.

Elizabeth (Acklin) Hinds' Washington Co., Virginia, Grantor's Deed made in July of 1825 listed her residence as Franklin County, Tennessee (where her presumed daughter, Ann Rice, was living).

One piece of anecdotal evidence from the late (great) researcher Connie Butterfield was found on a scrap of paper in a book handed down through the Rice family indicated that "Kit (Christopher) Acklin was our grandfather."   [Note: Connie also believed that Elizabeth Hinds was an Acklin]

Evidence*from my War of 1812 blog:

William Hinds, Private, 2nd Reg. Artillery

Washington Co. (VA)

Heirs: Nancy, Samuel, Kesiah, Sarah & James Hinds
DIED: JUNE 25, 1813

We know that William was "our" William Hinds because the names of his heirs (children) were identical to the children for whom Elizabeth (Acklin) Hinds was appointed guardian (Elizabeth's father or brother), Christopher Acklin, was a surety for the guardianship).

Administrator's Bond - Acklin, Hinds & Hunt

William Acklin, James V.A. Hinds and David Hunt were bonded and William Acklin was appointed Administrator for his son's, Theodore Acklin's, estate in (Huntsville) Madison Co., Alabama.

Much of my Acklin research is done in an effort to bolster the evidence that Nancy Hinds, daughter of William Hinds and Elizabeth Acklin, is, in fact, Mrs. Ann Rice.

Elizabeth (Acklin) Hinds (Partial) Deed
This deed between Elizabeth A. Hinds, dated 2 July 1825, identifies her residence as Franklin County, Tennessee. It is believed that she is in her daughter's household when the 1830 census was taken in Franklin Co., TN, but only the head of the household was identified by name and Elizabeth Hinds was not the head of household in 1830.

Resignation of James V. A. Hinds As Surveyor In Madison County, Alabama

Just one of the little gems found at the Madison County Records Center in Huntsville, Alabama; the record below was written by my 3rd great-granduncle, James Vance Acklin Hinds. He was the son of William & Elizabeth (Acklin) Hinds who were my 4th great-grandparents. He is the same James V.A. Hinds who went to "aid & assist Texas in her struggle for independence (in 1835)."
The resignation of James V. A. Hinds as County Surveyor as found in the Madison County, Alabama, Probate Files (File #2144):

As County Surveyor

Ordered to be recorded, and filed: See Probate Court Minute Book No. 5 p. 299
Recorded in Probate Record Book No. 22 page 79
Filed ___

Huntsville Madison County Alabama Dec. 28th 1857
To Hon. F. L. Hammond J. P _ and Commissioners Court of Said County

Gentlemen

Feeling myself under lasting obligations to your Honorable body for the confidence ___ and trust placed in me as your County Surveyor. I feel it my duty as resigning the same into your hands to give my reasons for so doing. Tho greatest and prime cause is my physical inability to do the duties of the office as it should be, a secondary cause was that in a primary point of view I could not live and do justice to my family by holding the office. I therefore with sincere thanks surrender the office back to the power who gave it.

With high regard I am your
Obt Servant

Administrator's Bond - Acklin, Hinds & Hunt

William Acklin, James V.A. Hinds and David Hunt were bonded and William Acklin was appointed Administrator for his son's, Theodore Acklin's, estate in (Huntsville) Madison Co., Alabama.

William Acklin was the son of Samuel & Elizabeth (Hunt) Acklin and the grandson of John Hunt, for whom Huntsville, Alabama was named. James V. A. Hinds was William H. Acklin's cousin. What was David Hunt's relationship, if any, to Acklin and/or Hinds?

A Civil War Soldier's Life - Part 1 (James A. Rice)

THE STORY OF JAMES A. RICE

My great-great-grandfather, James Alexander Rice, born October 2, 1835, and was five years old at the death of his father, Ransom Scroggins Rice. His mother, Ann, daughter of William & Elizabeth (Acklin) Hinds, remained in the Estill Springs, Franklin Co.,Tennessee, area where James was born. James A. Rice was still in that area when the 1850 census was taken.

After his mother's death in 1959, James A. Rice moved to Saline County, Illinois, where he used his skills as a stone cutter to build the county courthouse, as did other family members. An unmarried James was living with his brother, Arthur according to the 1860 census.

[Photo of James A. Rice provided by Rice descendant(s)]

When the Civil War broke out, James A. Rice enlisted as a soldier in the "Land of Lincoln."  He was a private in Company "B" in the 18th Regiment of the Illinois Infantry, enlisting on May 28, 1861, at Camp Douglas. From May 28, 1861, to December 1861 he was marked as "present" in the records. Private James A. Rice was "Absent," and "In Hspt. wounded Feb 15, 1862." A "Casualty Sheet" listed J. Rice's place of casualty as "Fort Donelson" and the date of casualty as "February 13, 14, 15, 1862." From the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, Dist. Detached from report signed by R. J. Oglesby, Col., Index 11a, No. 19, Page 8.

Private James A. Rice's "Certificate of Disability For Discharge" from the Army of the United States for his service in the 18th IL Regiment was not the end of this soldier's story. But, for the record, the excerpts from Private Rice's discharge:
CERTIFICATE OF DISABILITY FOR DISCHARGE

James A. Rice...was born in Winchester, in the State of Tennessee, is twenty-four years of age, 5 feet 8 3/4 inches high, dark complexion, dark eyes, dark hair and by occupation when enlisted stone cutter. During the last three months said soldier has been unfit for duty ninety days.

I most earnestly recommend the above discharge...C. C. Weaver, commanding Company (Note on side says Approved Thos F. P__, Brig Surg ..)

I certify, that I have carefully examined the said James A. Rice, of Captain H. S. Wilson's company, and find him incapable of performing his duties as a soldier, because of gunshot wound to the left hand which fractured the second and third metacarpal bones and destroyed so much of the muscular and ___ tissues as to render the hand permanently stiff. The degree of disability is three-fourths.

O.B. [Orange Butler] Ormsby, MD, Asst Surgeon, 18th Reg./_ in charge Hosp.
Brig Genl H. M. Judah
Discharged this 21st day of May 1862 at Shiloh, Tenn.

[One of his papers was also signed by General Ulysses S. Grant]
However, his military career was far from over.

Marymiah DeJarnett Hinds, Heir

An entry found in the SWEM INDEX was Hinds, Marrymiah Dejarnett, 25W(1)270.

There is no obvious connection between Marrymiah Dejarnett Hinds, wife of James Hinds, and our William and Elizabeth (Acklin) Hinds.  However, there are links between the Dejarnetts and the McGeehees, who have connections to the Acklins, so.......

Hinds, Marrymiah Dejarnett found in an article in The William and Mary quarterly, Volume 25.

Confederate Pension - Robert & Martha Hinds - Part II

Information contained in the Confederate Pension file of Robert Christopher Hinds of Franklin County, Tennessee. According to his file, he was part of the 41st TN Co. G. Robert Hinds was the 1st cousin of my ancestor, Union Captain James A. Rice, who was captured at Chickamauga (see blog post). Hinds & Rice were both grandchildren of William & Elizabeth (Acklin) Hinds.

Hinds' file mentioned that he "enlisted in the fall of 1862...after the capture of Donelson and serving in Mississippi until Chickamauga, serving continuously until the fight at Franklin, Tenn, in 1864....". Quoted documentation provided by pension application witness W. N. Taylor.

There is additional information on the widow's application of Martha (Marshall) Hinds, widow of Robert C. Hinds.

An historic record was made based upon the original record borrowed from Mrs. Wright L. Smith, through Captain James W. Allen of St. Louis, Missouri (basically a reflection of the battles listed in the Missouri State Archives records).

This record showed a mark next to Prisoner Of War.  When General Taylor surrendered, William N. Hinds became a POW.

Here's William Hinds in the family tree (nephew of Ann Hinds Rice).

Grandma Katie's Ancestors And DNA

Based upon DNA submitted by my brother at Family Tree DNA and a fortunate match with Grandma Katie's nephew's daughter (through Pearl Johnson, Grandma Katie's sister, and Robert Logan, Pearl's son), I was able to select persons who matched both my brother and Pearl's granddaughter, and make the assumption that those persons had a mutual ancestor(s) somewhere in Grandma Katie's family tree (as opposed to the Powers (paternal) tree or the Garrett (my maternal grandfather's) family tree).
