Civil War Casualty Elisha Wells

The Civil War Pension Application file for the widow of Elisha Wells, Lucinda, can be found on Fold3.com; it is 183 pages long!  The file reveals much more about Lucinda than it does Elisha, and her story is told elsewhere.  This is Elisha's life story.

In 1860, Elisha Wells, age 27, was living in Lapeer County (Attica Twp.) with his wife, Lucinda, age 22, daughters Sarah A [Amanda], age 7, Helen, age 5, and Almira, age 1 and son Henry M, age 4.  Everyone except for Almira [Amelia] was born in New York.  Helen was born 16 June 1854 at Addison Twp., Steuben Co., New York and Henry was born in Cayuga Co.]

Lucinda was awarded a pension for the services of Elisha Wells, of Oakland County, Michigan, who had been a private in Company "I" of the 14th Mich. Vol (Capt. Frank Powell's Company).  Elisha died on 22 June 1862 in Farmington, Mississippi, of consumption (this report stated that he died of typhoid fever in Camp Big Springs).  Soldier contracted consumption in April of 1862 at Hamburgh Landing, Tenn.  Lucinda testified that she was married in Weedsport, Cayuga Co., NY, on 31 Aug 1850 and that the certificate was destroyed by fire.

Wells, Elisha, Oxford.. Enlisted in company I, Fourteenth Infantry, Dec., 13,1861, at Oxford, for 3 years, age 34.- Mustered Feb. 13, 1862. Died of disease at Farmington, Miss., June 22,1862. Buried in National Cemetery, Corinth, Miss. Grave No. 2511. Original place of interment, Farmington, Miss.
