Elizabeth McMillan Shepherd of Franklin, Louisiana

Elizabeth McMillan, who married George B. Shepherd (biography below), is most likely the sister of R. N. (Robert Nathaniel) McMillan [ancestor of my Stainton relatives].  They were both born in Scotland and are enumerated together in the 1850 census in Franklin, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana.

The best find so far is the identity of Elizabeth McMillan's parents from her husband's biography [see below]:  "He [George B. Shepherd] was married, March, 1853, to Miss Elizabeth McMillan, a daughter of Robert McMillan and Janet Douglas, native of Scotland, born in 1833 and died in 1882."

From the this site:

George B. Shepherd [of Franklin, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana] is a native of Massachusetts.... . "...[he] came to Louisiana from Massachusetts and engaged as a salesman... .  After this he devoted his time to civil engineering, and in 1857 became editor of the Attakapas Register... . He was thus engaged until 1860, when he was appointed register of the State land office...until 1862, when he enlisted in the C. S. A. under General Miles, Louisiana Volunteers, in which command he served until the close of the war.

John Mack Probate In Walton County, Georgia

Susan Mack, Widow of John Mack,  (Image 627)

Taken from a Rootsweb message board:

"...John Mack [who] spent most of his life living in Walton Co., GA, where he died on November 6, 1873.

According to the 1850 census, John Mack of Walton Co. was born in SC (roughly 1786), as was his wife, Nancy.  I think that this Nancy was a Cherokee Indian.

John remarried on April 3, 1866, to Susan Pannell, b. abt. 1824.

Unless one of the descendants of the Scottish Macks of Connecticut (John Mack, from Inverness to Lyme Conn., 1669) migrated to South Carolina, I am beginning to wonder if the lineage may be Germanic instead.

John and Nancy Mack were the parents of my niece and nephew's ancestress, Nancy Mack Humphrey.

Did Nancy Mack Humphrey Have Cherokee Roots?

Thomas H. Brown, nee Humphrey, was the daughter of Thomas H. Humphrey (also an ancestor of my niece and nephew).  It was thought within the family that there was a Cherokee ancestress in the family, enough so to apply for papers.  The lineage:  (Nancy - thought to be Cherokee and married to John Mack; daughter Nancy Mack married Simeon Humphrey; Thomas H. Humphrey was their son and Thomas H. (Humphrey) Brown was his daughter).

The application was rejected, but I cannot reject the idea that Nancy (Mack) Humphrey's mother was a Native American Cherokee.
