Swinyer is the Anglicized version of one (or both) of the French names featured above.  Can't rule out Sweeney, Swinger, Swainard, etc.

There are DNA matches with Choiniere descendants, including one estimated to be my 2nd to 4th cousin and others who may be 3rd to 5th cousins.

Peter and Sophia Snay lived in upstate New York.

Because I was managing my brother's profile, his DNA was a proxy for me (mine had not been tested in January of 2015).  There was a DNA match on our maternal line (with two sisters) that confirmed the relationship found through traditional research methods.

Update and Correction: There was a DNA match, but it wasn't with my DNA.  Neither sister was on my list of matches at FTDNA!  Thank goodness my brother donated his DNA to the cause.

The Conviction of Dr. Crippen: New Forensic - Findings in a Century-Old Murder, from the Journal of Forensic Sciences, from Michigan State University.

[Excerpts from the] ABSTRACT:

Dr. Hawley Crippen was accused and convicted of murdering his wife in London in 1910.

In this study, genealogical research was used to locate maternal relatives of Cora Crippen, and their mitochondrial haplotypes were determined.

 Based on the genealogical and mitochondrial DNA research, the tissue on the pathology slide used to convict Dr. Crippen was not that of Cora Crippen. Moreover, that tissue was male in origin.

I was born and raised in Michigan, as was my father and grandfather.  William S. Powers was born 27 August 1859, in Grimsby, Ontario, Canada, to John and Mary Agnes (Kennedy) Powers.  Mary Agnes Kennedy was born December 1834 in Canada.  It is unknown when and where David Kennedy was born [I started looking for David's children's records (census, death records, etc.) for that information].

A report of David Kennedy's fatal accident was reported in the Western Planet, Chatham, Canada West, Wed. Nov. 8, 1854.

During the storm which took place on the evening of the 31st, alt. Two men, one named William Early, the other David Kennedy, were killed instantly by the fall of a tree, about half way between Troy Mills and Blenheim Village.  Clarity forbids any remarks concerning Kennedy. 

What other relevant information could be found in various editions of this newspaper?


Where was the family in 1851 (in a missing Harwich Twp. census?)?  The 1851 census has a category for the enumerated person's birthplace (where was David born; Canada or Scotland or...?).

After David's death, his widow, Ann lived in Grimsby and was enumerated in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses there.

Did David and/or Ann Kennedy own land in Grimsby, Harwich Twp., etc.?

Who were David Kennedy's parents?  There was a prominent Kennedy family in the Niagara area, but it is not known if there is a connection between David and those Kennedys.

Perhaps DNA will provide some answers.....

Grandma Katie's Ancestors And DNA

Based upon DNA submitted by my brother at Family Tree DNA and a fortunate match with Grandma Katie's nephew's daughter (through Pearl Johnson, Grandma Katie's sister, and Robert Logan, Pearl's son), I was able to select persons who matched both my brother and Pearl's granddaughter, and make the assumption that those persons had a mutual ancestor(s) somewhere in Grandma Katie's family tree (as opposed to the Powers (paternal) tree or the Garrett (my maternal grandfather's) family tree).

Do We Match?

There is a Power Et Al DNA site; my brother Dan graciously submitted his DNA so the "Y" (male Powers line) could be tested and included for comparison purposes in hope of finding a match or matches.

What is known about our Powers lineage is in my blog post "Michael Powers - As Far Back As My Powers Line Goes."  

Here are the results of my brother Dan's POWERS DNA test (37 markers).  Dan's results are most closely linked to Mr. Power and his brother, both born in Ireland (and with whom I've had contact), as well as this gentleman (born in England). [See my post, "The Results Are In"].

Speculation about our Powers line is piggybacked on the research of  the Irish Power brothers:

"I think that all Waterford Powers go back to Blackborough, Devon, England, and to one of the six persons by name 'le Poher' who came as part of the Norman Invasion. They were the four brothers - Sir Robert, Sir Roger, Simon and William - and their two cousins, Henry and John. The four brothers were sons of Bartholomew, Lord of Blackborough." Haplogroup I1

My brother's Y-DNA test revealed that his predicted Haplogroup is I1 (shorthand I-M253).  According to this site, the I1 subclade of Haplogroup I is estimated to be 4000 to 5000 years old (the old "15,00-20,000years ago in Iberia" information was wrong), and confirmed by the single nucleotide polymorphism, SNP, known as M253. While many I1 members trace their ancestry to Scandinavia, others find their roots in the British Isles, Germany, and beyond.

In Britain, haplogroup I1-M253 et al is often used as a marker for "invaders," Viking or Anglo-Saxon.

The Results Are In!

The first set of results from my brother's Family Tree Y-DNA test is in and there was an exact match at the 25 marker with a man who was born and raised in Waterford, Ireland, as were his ancestors since the time of the Norman Invasion of 1169.
