The regiment to which he belonged joined General Jackson early in November, 1814, and, on the 6th day of that month the army moved against Pensacola, Florida... . On the day following the town was stormed and taken. While the fight was progressing in the streets the advance of our troops was checked at one point by a gun which raked a street, dealing death in its ranks.  In this emergency, William Trousdale, with several other daring spirits, rushed rapidly forward in the face of the enemy's fire, drove the gunners from the deadly piece, captured it, and thus removed the obstacle which had stopped the progress of our men. ...the 2d regiment, under the command of Colonel Trousdale, advanced to attack the Indian and negro settlements in that vicinity. They found all the towns abandoned, and discovered large trails of the enemy leading to the east and northeast. A negro, captured in one of the houses, reported that they had fled to the Wahoo swamp. The Tennesseans burnt three large towns, which were built of hewn logs, and appeared to have been constructed during the last spring and summer.  (Source)

Sir : I had the honor, on the 10th inst., to inform you of my contemplated march to the Withlacoochie. 

On the evening before my arrival, Colonel Randall, the adjutant and inspector general, was ordered, with Major Upshan, of the Tennessee brigade,- to advance with the spies under command of Captains Lauderdale and Wilson, and the front guard under command of Colonel Trousdale, and select an encampment about four miles from the river. In the performance of this duty, they surprised a party of the enemy, killed ten warriors, and captured eleven women and children.

"Maria Florilla Flint Hamblen papers, 1821-1908... Maria Florilla Flint Hamblen was born in 1838 in Michigan. In 1850, the family moved to New York, and beginning in 1855, Maria attended Genesee College studying music and foreign languages."

"After teaching for a time, she visited her brother in New Orleans in December of 1865. He had been assigned to Forts Jackson and St. Phillips, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Hamblen. Maria married Hamblen in 1866. The couple moved to New York, then to Iowa, and then to Florida, where Samuel worked as a government surveyor. Then, in the late 1870s, they moved to Hot Springs. Maria taught music and was active in the Methodist Episcopal Church, Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, and Woman’s Christian Library Association. This collection includes an autobiography, letterbook, and scrapbook."

Statue On The Bay Of Pensacola

In 1528, Pamphilo de Narvaez, the celebrated rival of Hernando Cortez, in an expedition to the western coast of Florida, discovered the bay of Pensacola, where he landed in April, with about three hundred men. He penetrated into the interior, and marched for the high region of the Apalachees. The Indians harassed the Spaniards with an indomitable spirit; but they at last returned safely to the coast, and embarked. The vessels were afterwards wrecked, and nearly all on board perished.

West Florida And Colonel Reuben Kemper

When the Spanish authorities of Baton Rouge were deposed, it was anticipated that Governor Folch of the Mobile district would attempt to interfere with the organization of the little republic. So the convention posted a line of sentinels along the banks of the Pearl river, the western boundary of the part of West Florida in revolt.

The maintenance of this line was found to be an uncertain and expensive means of safety against attack. It was determined to settle the matter at once by a resort to arms. War was declared against Mobile. An expedition under the command of Colonel Reuben Kemper made its way to the shores of Mobile bay, but being poorly equipped was compelled to defer its attack until a supply of arms and munitions could be procured.

An agent of Kemper managed to purchase of Henri de la Franci, a citizen of Baton Rouge, a lot of arms; and the convention bought a flat-boat load of western produce, transferred it to a keel-boat and sent it to the relief of Kemper.  [Source]

Tennessee Volunteers--It is now understood that the Tennessee volunteers will all go to Florida.  It is Colonel Trousdale's regiment, now at Fort Mitchell, will move in a few days, and the other regiment on or about the 10th instant.  So it is stated by an officer in the Tennessee brigade....The last Federal Union states differently as follows:  Florida--it is stated that the services of the Tennessee has been rejected by Governor Call.

"The capture of Lt. Col. George Campbell gave the British leaders in Charlestown the opportunity to replace the unpopular commandant of Georgetown. Some of his officers had written to Charlestown complaining that they were already in a near state of mutiny at the time of his capture, which may explain why none ventured forth to rescue him." Orange Park, Nov. 14. - Death of the Rev. George Field, aged 73 years. Born in Norfolk (or Huntingdon), England, Feb. 10, 1810, he emigrated to the United States, and became a member of the Pearl St. Society, New York City, in 1836. After missionary work in the West, he began to preach in Detroit on Dec. 9, 1843, and came to be regarded as "the father of the New Church in Michigan". Author of The Early History of the New Church in the Western States and Canada (1879), and The Two Great Books of Nature and Revelation; or, the Cosmos and the Logos (1870).

A man of firm conviction, earnestness, and courage, he was sometimes a controversial figure. But his able and bold advocacy of the Writings won the respect even of his critics, and was especially eulogized by the leaders of the "Academy movement". [Source]

"We therefore, the representatives aforesaid, appealing to the Supreme Being of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do solemnly publish and declare the several districts composing the territory of West Florida to be a free, independent state; and that they have a right to institute for themselves such form of government as they may think conducive to their safety and happiness; to establish commerce; to provide for the common defence; and to do all acts which may of right be done by a sovereign and independent nation: at the same time declaring all acts within the said territory of West Florida after this date, by any tribunal, or authority not deriving their powers from the people agreeable to the provisions established by this convention, to be null and void; and calling upon all foreign nations to respect this our declaration, acknowledge our independence, and give us such aid as may be consistent with the laws and usages of nations."
