Found Husband Dead Upon Returning From Funeral

When Mrs. Hanes/Haines returned home from her father's funeral in Lapeer, Michigan, her husband, Herman D. Hanes, who had apparently been in good health when she left home, was found dead upon her return.

Mrs. Hanes, David Lamond's daughter Margaret, married Herman Hanes on August 10, 1892. She was the sister of Jean (Lamond) More, who married my great-grandmother's brother, Ward B. More.

A Murdered Child In My Cousin's Family Tree

The murder came to my attention while browsing newspapers online. Little did I know that the child's mother was already in my family tree!

Evelyn/Eveline (Barnum) Hillier was the daughter of Joseph and Caroline (Pollock) Barnum and the granddaughter of Calvin and Evaline (Jennings) Barnum. My first cousins are also descendants of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Barnum.  Evelyn Barnum married Robert Hillier on August 8, 1908.

Robert E. Hillier, son of Leslie (or Wesley) and Mary (Deck) Hillier, age 20, killed his wife's child* in 1909 in Flint. One account of the murder indicated that a few months earlier Evelyn had filed an assault charge against her employer; was the baby Robert's child? Cause of Death for two day old Joseph Hillier was listed as unknown on his death certificate, 13 January 1909, in Genesee County, Michigan.

Orilla (Butterfield) Patterson's Death Notice & Obituary - Granby, Missouri

From the Miner & Mechanic:
Friday, April 27, 1934

Mrs. Arrilla Patterson passed away at her home Tuesday night at 9:30, after a lingering illness of heart disease. Funeral services were held at the Christian church Thursday afternoon at 2:30. She is survived by one daughter, Nellie Patterson. Obituary next week.

From the Miner & Mechanic(s), 4 May 1934:

Orilla Patterson was born in Lockport, New York, October 26, 1846, and died at her home in Granby April 25, 1934, at the age (of) 87 years. She removed to Branch county, Michigan with her parents* when a young child. She was united in marriage to J. B. Patterson in Flushing, Mich., December 25, 1866. To this union two daughters were born. With her husband and daughters she came to Stone Prairie in Barry county, Mo., in 1885, living the remaining part of her life in Barry and Newton counties. Mrs. Patterson and her daughter, Nellie, came to Granby to make their home in 1907. She had lived a faithful Christian life for many years, and was a loving mother and a good neighbor and friend to those who knew her. Funeral services were held at the Christian church by the Rev. Luther Carlin, pastor of the Pierce City Baptist church. Mrs. Patterson is survived by her daughter, Nellie, and a host of friends who extend sympathy to the bereaved daughter. Burial was in Granby cemetery.

Serial Murders By Poison In Michigan

From the Traverse City Record-Eagle, Wednesday, January 30, 1929:

Edward Fogle, Emma Fogle and Charles Dumaw were living on Utah Street in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan, for the 1920 Census.

The New York Times offered this:

FLINT, Mich., Jan. 26.--Disinterment of the body of Charles Dumaw who died May 11, 1923, was ordered late today by State authorities as the latest development of a "whole ... [Note: That is all that is available without purchasing the article]

Edward & Emma Fogle were living in Owosso, Shiawassee County, Michigan, for the 1900 Census; they had been married 6 years and had no children.

In 1910 The Fogles were living in Gratiot County, Michigan, with a boarder, Levi Millard. Levi Millard died in 1916 "positive diagnosis not made - symptoms indicated malignant disease...".

Thomas F. Loree died , possibly at the hand of Mrs. Fogle in December of 1928, according to the article above.

In 1916 Thomas F. Loree married Mrs. J. W. (Leah) Loree (probably the widow of his brother, James W. Loree). Thomas Loree & James W. Loree were named as the children of James & Rachael (Williams) Loree; Thomas on his marriage record and James on his death record. James & Leah Loree had a daughter, Mary, who married Ever Anderson in 1922 in Genesee Co., Michigan. Leah Loree died in 1923. Ever Anderson (assuming it's the same person) married Lillian Vining in 1926 in Genesee County, Michigan, so perhaps Mary (Loree) Anderson died before 1926. It appears as though Thomas did not have any living heirs at the time of his death. (I wondered why he bequeathed property to Mrs. Fogle).

Edward & Emma Fogle were arrested but were they convicted? Were they sent to prison? I don't know.

Connecting The Elliotts To Colwell And Carpenter

After being prompted towards further research of the Carpenters of Atlas Township in Genesee County, Michigan, especially William & Catherine (Colwell) Carpenter, I noticed that JAMES ELLIOTT was enumerated as a Carpenter nephew in the 1880 census.

Was James Elliott a nephew of Catherine (Colwell) Carpenter?

The Elliott family found in Shiawassee County (where many of the Colwells lived) appeared to be the family to which James Elliott belonged. There was a Susan Elliott, whose (2nd) marriage record named her father as Albert Elliott and her mother as Mary Colwell. James Elliott appeared to be the same (age wise) as the James Elliott enumerated as a nephew with the Carpenter family in 1880, a group that included Catherine (Colwell) Carpenter. Catherine Colwell had a sister Mary - though it appeared as though when Mary died she was Mary Libby.

A death record for a James Elliott, born in Michigan November 6, 1868, was found in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, online here. He was widowed, his wife's name was Helen, and he was to be buried in Flint, Michigan.

In 1910, boarding with an Andrew Stumpf (b. MI) there was a James Elliot, age 42, single, who was a cook and a teamster, living in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio.

In 1920 James Elliot, age 51, was in Cleveland, Ohio, on Clark Street, as a married man and head of the household, working as a salesman for an oil company, born in Michigan (as was his mother; father born in NY according to census records). Living with him was his wife, Helen, age 56, born in Ohio, and a grandson, Earl Russell, who was born in Ohio, whose father was born in Ireland, and a daughter, Lillian Russell, divorced, age 38, born in Ohio.

The Cleveland, Ohio, Library maintains a "necrology" file, so I searched it for James Elliott and for Helen Elliott (results below).

A search for James Elliott that began in Michigan took me to Ohio only to find that he was buried back in Michigan (although I did not find a record of his grave). Is this genealogy's version of taking the scenic route?

Colwells of Genesee, Lapeer & Shiawasee Counties

A recently received e-mail from a researcher (Verna) who wanted to connect Kate Colwell in my Rootsweb WorldConnect database to her William Francis Colwell.

Catherine (Kate) Colwell married William James Carpenter of Atlas Twp., Genesee Co., Michigan. My (slight) connection is to the Carpenter family, not the Colwells (my grandmother's half-sister married a Carpenter). Featuring the Carpenter family in a blog had been something I'd considered, so rather than simply answering the e-mail, I started gathering information. After gathering the information, the Carpenter blog will be separate from this "Colwells" blog. In addition, I'm going to do an Elliott/Colwell blog.

Information from Verna's e-mail stated that:
William Francis Colwell's parents were James, who was born in England, and Catherine (Collins or Calkins) born in Ireland, per his (W.F.'s) death record. William Francis Colwell married* Marion (Harding) Maine as her second husband. Marion Harding's sister married a man named Campbell whose biography was included in a history of Genesee County, MI.

James Colwell possibly remarried (Ann Burch) and his second wife could have been the mother of Kate Colwell.

Taylor Family With Iosco Co., MI, Roots

While researching the background of Civil War veteran Charles Eickhoff, whose obituary was found in the Flint Journal while doing other research (see post below), some items of interest (to me) about his daughter, Henrietta (Eickhoff) Taylor and her husband, Sibley Taylor (clergyman & lawyer) were discovered.

Sibley Taylor, his first wife, and his children lived near Oscoda, Iosco Co., Michigan, in the late 1800's. Jim and I lived in Oscoda for a few years in the 1990's. We bought what was thought to be our retirement home shortly after Wurtsmith AFB closed in Oscoda, but sold the little cottage near Lake Huron so we could live full time in our RV motorhome and travel the country unencumbered.

The Taylors are listed in extracted items from the Tawas (Iosco Co.) newspapers (Huron Shores G.S.) here.

Found at www.familysearch.org was a listing for the marriage of Henrietta Eickhoff and Sibley G. Taylor in Grayling, Crawford Co., Michigan, on 18 September 1895.

Additional information, including this (Mr. and Mrs. C. EICKHOFF are the grandparents to a young preacher, born to Rev. and Mrs. S. G. TAYLOR, on the 10th inst. (28 Aug 1902)) was gleaned from the online transcriptions of the newspaper, Avalanche, of Grayling, Crawford County, Michigan, found here.
