The Classmates

The Classmates

"Friends, and even relatives, who had enlisted on opposite sides... . Here, caught by the camera, is one of the many instances.  On the left sits Lieutenant J. B. Washington, C. S. A., who was an aide to General Johnston at Fair Oaks.  Beside him sits Lieutenant George A. Custer, of the Fifth U.S. Cavalry, aide on McClellan's staff, later famous cavalry general... . Both men were West Point graduates, and had attended the military academy together.  On the morning of May 31, 1862, at Fair Oaks, Lieutenant Washington was captured by some of General Casey's pickets.  Later in the day his former classmate ran across him and a dramatic meeting was thus recorded by camera."

The older lady (seated) is Ellen (Davey) Murphy. She is surrounded by all her children*. So far we know the young woman in the back on the left is Sarah Agnes. It is suspected that the woman in the back on the very right is Mary.  [Photograph probably taken in Detroit, Michigan].

A big thank you to Kathleen who sent the photo and provided the information.

There are five male children listed above and six males in the photo -- son-in-laws, or am I missing a son?

If anyone can verify who is whom (or wants to make an educated guess!), please post a comment.

The oldest child, Ellen Murphy, is my grandkids' 3rd great-grandmother.

Update:  The person who sent the photo to me said that I was missing a son, Thomas (1870-1909); and also that the picture was showing a broken link -- hopefully it's fixed (October 14th).

Additional information about the Cameron family (including Nancy Cameron, and another photo) see Sandy's webpage here.

Perhaps the Arenac Independent newspaper has an article about Nancy Cameron's birthday celebration listing the attendees.
