Sadastan Jones Of Dallas County

Past and Present of Dallas County, Iowa:

Sadastan Jones...is a native of Ohio where he was born October 5, 1840, a son of John and Maria [Duck] Jones, both of whom passed away in Indiana. They were the parents of nine children and the subject of this review, who was the fourth in order of birth, was left an orphan at the age of ten years. Sadastan Jones grew to manhood in Indiana, and in 1861 came to Dallas county, Iowa, purchasing a farm of forty acres, which he cultivated for two years. In 1864 Mr. Jones was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Coleman, who was born in Indiana, June 12, 1844, a daughter of John and Sarah (Hesser) Coleman, the former a native of Pennsylvania and the latter of Ohio.

Samuel B. Gingrich

Samuel B. Gingrich...Stark county [Illinois] numbers him among her native sons, his birth having occurred in Essex township, April 17, 1852.

His father, Christian Gingrich, was born in York county, Pennsylvania, November 8, 1812, and was a son of Christian Gingrich, Sr., who removed with his family to Ohio, casting in his lot among the pioneer settlers of Ashland county, where he resided for a number of years. He afterward came to Illinois and joined his children, who had preceded him to this state, becoming a resident of Stark county. His son, Christian Gingrich, Jr., was reared in Ashland county, Ohio, and was married there in 1837 to Miss Mary Coleman*, a native of Lancaster county, Pennsylvania.

*Mary Coleman was Jim's 2nd great grand aunt.  She was the daughter of Valentine Coleman and his 1st wife, Catherine Schultz.  Jim is the 3rd great-grandson of Valentine Coleman and his 2nd wife, Eva Schultz (Catherine's sister).

First Frame House In Chicago?

From the story of John and Sarah (Hesser) Coleman found in their son-in-law's (Sadastan Jones) biography:

John Coleman [Jacob, Valentine, Valentine] came to Indiana [John and Sarah were married in LaPorte County, Indiana, in 1834] at a very early day. He was a carpenter by trade and built the first frame house in the city of Chicago. He also carried the mail from Laporte, Indiana, to Chicago on horseback and it will thus be seen that he took a prominent part in the very earliest development of what was then known as the far west. He participated in the Black Hawk war and subsequently removed to Nebraska where he passed away in 1891, at the venerable age of eighty-three years, while his wife's death occurred the following year. The James Gooch Family And Their Connections

A family tree entitled Descendants Of John Johnston provided the following information regarding James Gooch and Sarah Porter, (a couple who has ties to Jim's Coleman/Kohlmann family) :

James Johnston and Jane Greer had the following child living with them [links added]:

PARTHENIA3 THORNE [Jane Greer Johnston's niece] was born on 25 Dec 1804 in Stewart County, Tennessee. She died on 02 Sep 1876 in Robertson County, Tennessee.

She married David Alexander Gooch, son of James Gooch and Sarah Porter about 1825 in Robertson County, Tennessee. He was born on 28 Jan 1803 in North Carolina. He died before 1860.

There was a link between the Johnstons and the Bell Witch legend (there's a Bell Witch Facebook page, too).

The oath of Reverend William German who swore that he preached the funeral sermon of Valentine Coleman...

Elizabeth Leighteberger....testified that Valentine and Anna Maria (Schrull) Coleman were married upwards of 43 years at her own house by Jacob Alingas/Aringer(?)  Elizabeth was 84 as of 20 November 1846; she also mentioned that Valentine Coleman died 24 August 1845 and that he was at least 10 years older than she was (he was over 90 when he died according to the statement).

...personally appeared John Shrull [or Schrull]...was acquainted with the widow of Valentine Coleman before their marriage; she was Anna Maria Shrull...they had 2 sons and 2 daughters together...

An affidavit from Frans Holler, a resident of Manchester Township, York County, Pennsylvania, who became acquainted with Valentine Coleman sixty years ago.  His neighbors then living informed me that he had been a soldier in the Revolutionary War.  ...Valentine Coleman died __ August 1845... .  Mr. Holler, age 82, was also well acquainted with the widow Coleman.  Dated 25 February 1847

Philip Huver also appeared before Peter Zorger, J.P. in York County.  Mr. Huver stated that he became acquainted with Valentine Coleman 35 years ago... he must have been about 90 when he died....February 25, 1847

Valentine Coleman's name was also listed on a document entitled "An Act For The Relief Of Daniel Henderson And Others, Soldiers and widows of Soldiers of the Revolutionary War(s) dated 15 April 1847."

Another letter to the Honorable John C. Spencer that referenced the 300 citizens of Delaware County who signed the petition, was dated February 2, 1843.

Simon F. Reed was enlisted at Columbus in the spring of 1841...

Valentine Coleman's Annuity

Valentine Coleman's name found on a list from the Treasury Department of Pennsylvania (embedded in another's* Revolutionary War pension papers) of pensioners residing in York County, dated June 28, 1848:

A Note About Valentine Coleman

A handwritten note found among other family papers now in our (Jim & Cathy's) possession regarding Valentine Coleman.  It looks as though there is a birthdate (1798) and a date of death (1860), but then again, maybe not.  To complicate matters, there is a Valentine Coleman I, Valentine Coleman II, and Valentine Coleman III in Jim's lineage.  Eva (Schultz) Coleman, the second wife of Valentine Coleman III was born in 1798 and died in 1860.  Was this note all about Eva?  I can't decipher most of the note.

A Toddler's Lock of Hair - Mary Elizabeth Whiteman

A lock of hair from Mary Elizabeth Whiteman (b. Aug 1857) of Waldo, Marion Co., Ohio, who died 24 January 1861, found on the note below:


On the other side, there is a note from John C. Gingrich to Francis Whiteman, Catherine [Coleman] Whiteman and the children. Rebecca is mentioned by name and something about a dress pattern....



Christian Gingrich married Mary Ann Coleman, the half sister of Catherine (Coleman) Whiteman; the Gingrich's had a son named John who would have been 20 years old in 1860. He is probably the John C. Gingrich who wrote the letter to the Whitemans. The Gingrich family lived in Stark Co., Illinois.

Miller Bible Records

The first document was given to Richard S. Palm, by his grandmother, Hazel V. (Smith) Palm (Rasmussen). It stated that his (Richard's) grandmother's name was Whiteman (Eva Whiteman who married Henry Smith). Eva Whiteman's mother was Catherine Coleman (she married Francis Whiteman). Catherine's mother was Eva Schultz (who married Valentine Coleman). It seems logical that Great-Great-Greatgrandmother "Miller" was Eva Schultz's mother, but I don't know -- I haven't worked that out yet.

A Valentine Coleman Descendant in Lapeer

While filling in some blanks in the Valentine Coleman (or Kohlmann) family tree, I found a descendant in this tree who died in Lapeer Co., Michigan (Metta Shroll Rybolt) in 1955.

Valentine Coleman, Jr. who married Magdalena, was a Revolutionary War veteran who was born in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania and died in York County, PA. The PA Archives have an entry describing land belonging to a Valentine Coleman here. (Which Valentine?)

Here's a tidbit from the Rawson Library collection of Cass City, Tuscola Co., Michigan, regarding Harry Rybolt. (The online newspaper collection has several items relevant to Lapeer County researchers.)

"Harry Rybolt is again able to be around after being confined to the house for several weeks with his foot, having lot three toes by a buzz saw." (8-21-1914)

Since Jim's Dad was born in Waldo, OH, and his Mother in Pittsburgh, PA (they moved to Detroit where they met and married) most of my Lapeer County, MI, research revolves around my family, not Jim's. What a nice surprise to find another Valentine Coleman descendant in Lapeer. (We're usually in Lapeer in the summer).

The Gooch Connection

Nicy Lavonia Farmer Coleman

The wife of Jacob H. Coleman and the mother of Ada M. and Chattie Coleman, was born October 5, 1849, in Illinois, and when eighteen years of age was married in Macoupin County, in that state, on November 7, 1867. Nicy Lavonia Farmer was a descendant of the historic Gooch family of Virginia, to which the first Governor of the state belonged. Other noted men intermarried with or belonging to the family, were Henry Clay, Senator Thomas H. Benton, John C. Fremont and others.

We have the following Gooch history, that as far as it goes with dates lacking is supposed to be correct, and yet some record gives the names of the parents of James Gooch who married Sarah Porter, as William and Frances.

This nice little piece of Gooch information was tucked away in the Valentine Kohlmann book by Chattie Coleman Westenius. [Jim is a descendant of Valentine Kohlmann, too].

The Gooch family has Rice, Graves, Kimbrough connections, among others. Since I have Graves & Rice ancestors and since the lines are far from being established, I have an interest in sorting out those families. B-I-L Frank’s family has an almost proven line to an “ancient planter” Graves. He also has a Kimbro/Kimbrough, but that is still a work in progress. So the Graves/Kimbrough/Gooch/Rice link is one to which I can refer as needed.
