Up Goes Huddy For Philip White

The incident from the Loyalist's point of view:

His [Captain Richard Lippincott's] connection with the execution of Captain Joshua Huddy, of the rebel service, attracted a great deal of attention both in Europe and America. Captain Huddy was a partisan officer of some repute in New Jersey, and had been concerned in the murder of a Loyalist named Philip White, who was a relative of Lippincott, and a resident of Shrewsbury.

Shortly after, Captain Huddy was captured and taken as prisoner to New York. The " Board of Associated Loyalists of New York " sent Captain Lippincott to Middleton Point, or Sandy Hook, with Captain Huddy and two other prisoners, to exchange them for prisoners held by the rebels. He was authorized to execute Huddy in retaliation for White, who had already been put to death. Therefore, on the 12th of April, 1782, having exchanged the two other prisoners, Captain Lippincott hung Huddy on a tree by the beach, under the Middleton Heights. In 1867 the tree was still to be seen, and tradition keeps alive in the neighbourhood the story connected with it.

The Tories Fled Precipitately

While on a visit in 1781 to her [Nancy Craighead Richard Dunlap] sister, Rachel, wife of Dr. [David] Caldwell of Guilford, the latter's house was surrounded by armed Tories, for the purpose of seizing the Doctor, who was an ardent Whig and taking him to the British camp.

As they were about to leave the house with their plunder and their prisoner, Mrs. Dunlap, coming from another room, stepped up behind Dr. Caldwell leaned over his shoulder, and whispered to him, as if intending the question for his ear alone, asking him if it were not time for Gillespie and his men to he there. A soldier standing near heard the words, and in great alarm, demanded what she meant. The lady replied she was merely speaking with her brother.

In a moment all was confusion, the whole party were panic-stricken and in the consternation produced by this ingenious manoeuvre the Tories fled precipitately, leaving their prisoner and plunder. [Source]

Thomas Browne And A Cameron Connection

From the beginning of the Revolutionary War, East Florida served as a retreat for loyalist refugees from the Carolinas and Georgia. As early as 1776, Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Brown, himself a fugitive from Savannah, formed a regiment in whole or in part of these refugees which he called the East Florida Rangers. [Source]

"Lieut. Col. Thomas Brown, the commander there, called in some Indians allies to aid in defense. 200 Cherokees subsequently joined his 150 of his King’s Carolina Rangers and some militia. Augusta (i.e. Fort Cornwallis) was not adequately fortified at that time, and Brown attempted to moved his position...".

Illinois republicans showed dissatisfaction, too, with the slight honor conferred upon the state in the matter of higher military appointments. By the summer of 1861, after Illinois had raised ten regiments of regular troops, not a single colonel, lieutenant-colonel, or higher officer had been selected from the state.  Meantime the republican state officials at Springfield from Governor Yates down had been making recommendations for the commissioning as brigadier-generals of such Illinoisans as John Pope* and John M. Palmer. When finally Lincoln did acknowledge these claims. Palmer was overlooked, in spite of the fact that Senator Trumbull regarded him as "one of the bravest & in my opinion the coolest, most sagacious & ablest of them all." [Source]
