Stephen Hopkins Update

Mayflower History


The baptism records of Stephen Hopkins' children Giles and Constance, as well as an additional child Elizabeth, were discovered in the parish registers of Hursley, Hampshire, England.

And there in Hursley, on 9 May 1613, Mary Hopkins the wife of Stephen was buried. Mary's children Giles, Constance, and Elizabeth are all named in her probate estate papers dated 10 May 1613 and on file at the Hampshire Records Office (file: 1613AD/046).

Manson Franklin Backus

Because of our mutual ancestors, Mr. Backus has forged the path for a possible Mayflower Descendants' membership.

 "A Volume of Memoirs and Genealogy of Representative Citizens of the City of Seattle and county of King, Washington..." has a brief biography of Manson Franklin Backus that mentioned John Backus:

"John Backus, the grandfather of our subject, was born in Washington county [NY], in that state, whence he early removed to Livingston county.  Here he followed the life of a frugal, industrious farmer, and attained the advanced age of eighty-eight years."

Manson F. Backus's father, Clinton Theron Backus, was the half-brother of my 3rd great-grandmother, Laura A. (Backus) Richmond.  Our lines are identical except for the highlighted entries in the Abridged Compendium, by Frederick Virkus (added links):

John Reynolds, Sarah Backus And Me

Much of the information about John Reynolds and Sarah Backus found at the Reynolds Family Association was excerpted from The history and descendants of John and Sarah (Backus) Reynolds .

John Reynolds, the immigrant, died at Norwich July 22, 1702... .  On a record dated January 31, 1701/2, he is mentioned as one of the first settlers "now surviving." His will is dated July 15, 1702, seven days before his death. The will mentions as survivors his wife Sarah, only son Joseph, and four married daughters, Sarah Post, Mary Lathrop, Elizabeth Lyman and Lydia Miller.  At his death John owned about 79 acres or more in Norwich.

JOHN(2) DOANE, Jr. (John1) was born probably at Plymouth about 1635 and died at Eastham Mar 15, 1708, aged about 73 years. He married first Apr 30, 1662, Hannah, daughter of Edward Bangs, who came over to Plymouth in the Ann in July, 1623. She was born at Plymouth about 1644 and was living at Eastham in 1677 then being named in her father's will.  Mr. Doane went with his father's family from Plymouth to Nauset or Eastham in 1645.

He was a large landholder and was quite extensively engaged in farming. It is understood that his homestead was near that of his father.  He doubtless was buried in the old Town Cove burial ground.

From the Cleveland book written by Edmund Janes Cleveland:

Edward (3) Cleveland, lived in the N. W. corner of Cantebury now the S. E. part of Hampton; was taxed 1716 on 24 pounds.  In land distribution Canterbury, April 30, 1723, he received 1 1/2 shares as a first settler and planter--Canterbury rec. "Edward Cleveland, Junr., & Rebeckah Paine were m. in Kingstown in the Govt. of R. I. by John Eldred Asst."  Admitted to church; Edward (3), 1741, Rebecca, May 31, 1719, she separated from chh., 1744.  Will of Edward (3) Cleveland dated Oct. 28, 1765, inventory of property Nov. 16, 1771, 249 pounds and 10S.

EDWARD CLEVELAND (Edward, Moses) m. Rebekah Paine on April 17, 1716, in Kingston (RI).  Rebekah was a daughter of Elisha and Rebecca (Doane) Paine.

The Genealogical Bulletin published BACKUS FAMILY NOTES, By Theron Royal Woodward, excerpted below:

Now a record of a deed has been discovered, dated Sept. 21, 1774, from "John Backus and Joanna his wife, both living in Sheffield, Berkshire Co., Mass.," to Silas Cleveland of Canterbury, Conn., conveying land which Joanna inherited from her father Edward Cleveland. John, Timothy, Solomon and Elijah, all sons of John and Joanna, paid taxes in Sheffield, Mass., 1772-1775, but the town records give no mention of the Backus name.

Nearly, if not all, of this branch removed to Granville, N. Y., and many of the prominent men of the name in New York and the West are their descendants. The son John Backus, b. Aug. 25, 1747, served, in the Revolution against Ticonderoga, from Hancock, Mass., and afterwards enlisted twice from Granville, N. Y. He married Jerusha Baker, daughter of Benjamin and Jerusha (Parish) Baker, and removed 1812, to Freetown, N. Y., and died in Groton, N. Y., Feb. 11, 1842, aged 95.

Among his descendants may be noted Jay Spicer Backus, D.D., a celebrated Baptist clergyman, Truman J. Backus, L.L.D., President of the Packer Collegiate Institute, Brooklyn, N. Y., Manson Backus, President of the First National Bank of Washington, Seattle, Wash., and Rev. A. H. Backus, Rector of St. Mary's Church, Chihuahua, Mexico. [I'M A DESCENDANT, TOO]

It is probable that this will be the first notice that the descendants of John and Joanna Backus will have of their Mayflower ancestry [written in 1904], and they may also add the following distinguished Colonials to their list of lineal ancestors- Ensign Jared Spencer, b. 1614, soldier in King Philip's war; Stephen Post, Cambridge 1634; William Hyde, b. 1600, of Newton 1633; John Reynolds, Norwich 1659; Moses Cleveland, b. 1624, soldier King Phillip's war; Edward Winn, Woburn 1640; Walter Palmer, b. 1585, first Representative from Rehoboth; Thomas Paine, Representative 1696, soldier King Phillip's war; Nicholas Snow, came on the Ann, 1623, Deputy 1648; John Doane, b. 1591, Asst. Gov. 1632, 1633, 1639; and Edward Bangs, b. 1592, came in the Ann 1623, Captain of the Guard Plymouth Colony, Deputy 1652.

New Grounds For Divorce

As much Backus research as I have done, this was news to me.

New grounds for divorce in Massachusetts in 1784. The wife of John Backus, a silversmith, received a divorce because he beat her, despite his defense that he knew no other practice because he had seen his father beat his mother. [Source]

The William And Mary Quarterly also weighed in on the Backus divorce, and mentioned the deposition of William Whiting, Jr. [Suffolk, MA, Court Files #129846...].

The couple was identified as John Backus and Sarah Whiting Backus. Laura Ingersoll Secord was Sarah Whiting Backus's step-daughter.

Edmund Hobart - A Possible Ancestor

Biographical information about Edmund Hobart found in Representative Men and Old Families of Southeastern Massachusetts ...  Hobart is my ancestor IF his daughter, Rebecca, was Edward Bangs' wife.  Apparently the jury is still out on that one.... .

(I) Edmund Hobart, from Hingham, in the County of Essex, England, and born that parish about 1570, came to this country, arriving in 1633 at Charlestown, and with his son, Thomas, and several others, came to "Bare Cove" the same year probably for the purpose of assisting in establishing a new plantation... .
He was an early settler of Hingham, one of those who drew their home lots on Town (North street) Sept 18, 1635.  He married first, Margaret Dewey, who was the mother of his children, and second, Oct 10, 1634, Mrs. Sarah Lyford, widow of Rev John.
