Clara Estelle (Powers) Brooks Sincerbeaux, was my great-grandfather's (William S. Powers) sister. L. R.'s sister, Lola C., married her step-mother's brother, John E. Powers.

Peter Snay's Death Record

Several years ago, via snail mail, I sent a request to the New York State Archives Research Services requesting a death record for Sophia Snay in Franklin.  The years to be searched were 1900, 1901 and 1902.  The researcher sent a note back stating that she searched through 1903 and did not locate!

I had better luck for Sophia's husband, Peter Snay with my request at the NY Archives' search for 1899, 1900 and 1901 in Franklin Co.?.

Perished In A Fire

The James McManigul family (husband, wife, child) perished in a fire in Lapeer [actually it was Tuscola County] (published in the San Francisco Bulletin on January 9, 1874).

Drowned In Higgins Lake In 1921

A University of Michigan student drowned at Higgins Lake in August of 1921. Some of my favorite childhood memories were from Higgins Lake. I always thought of it as "safe" since one could venture out far from shore and still find shallow water. But it was not safe for Emerson William Jones who drowned at Higgins Lake in Roscommon County, Michigan, on 7 Aug 1921 and was buried in Toledo, Ohio.

Adelaide (Hoff) Eisenhauer died 29 August 1911 in Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan. She and George Eisenhauer were married on July 6, 1904, in Detroit. Adelaide, born 4 July 1881, in New York, was the daughter of Edward & Margaret (Bikerton) Hoff. Adelaide Eisenhauer was buried in Mt. Elliott Cemetery.

Weird Stories - Husband And Ex-Husband Die And Are Buried At Same Hour In Oakland Co., Michigan

Dateline Oxford, Mich., January 20--

John Norris, who died at his home here, was buried in Royal Oak cemetery today. Besides a widow, he left three children, one son and two daughters. He was born in Burlington, Vt., 86 years ago and resided in Michigan 25 years. He was the first postmaster at Auburn, a little village three miles east of Pontiac, a position he held ten years. Later moved to Detroit, where he lived four years, going from there to Pontiac and finally in 1903 came to this village to spend his last days. His first wife was Miss Susie Bean, to whom he was married in 1851 in Pennsylvania. She died nine years ago. He was married in June, 1900, to Mrs. Addie Fox, of Pontiac, at Mt. Clemens. Coincident with the death of John Norris here, came a telegram to Mrs. Norris that her former husband, Andrew Fox, from whom she was divorced, died at Holly at the same hour as did Mr. Norris. The funerals were held at the same hour. Fox was a veteran of the civil war and a former resident of this village.

According to John Norris's Michigan death record, he was the son of Henry & Julia [Eunice] (Weed) Norris and was born in Vermont on November 11, 1822. John Norris was buried in the Royal Oak Cemetery in Oakland County, Michigan.

Adeline (Torrey) (Fox) Norris died 5 July 1916 in Oxford, Oakland Co., Michigan, and was buried in Oxford Cemetery. According to her death record she was the daughter of Jonathan & Margaret (Howard) Torrey and was born in Michigan on 20 August 1847.

The actual death records indicated that Mr. Fox may have died on January 16th, just past midnight, and that Mr. Norris died on January 15th about 5:00 P.M., so they may have actually died hours apart but on different days.

Helms of Detroit - A Death Record Online

Miriam at AnceStories posted an update of the status of Michigan death records online at the MI Archives. That's the good news. The bad news -- the Library of Michigan is considering some Draconian actions up to and including permanently closing the Library. See the article Miriam referenced here.

By coincidence, I checked the Archives website for death records updates last night and found (among other things) a death record for Julius Helms of Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. He's my grandkids' 4th great-grandfather. Hopefully I'll remember to look up an obituary for Julius Helms, who died 8 December 1913, when I return to Michigan (if the Library is still accessible and/or perhaps the Burton Collection at the Detroit Public Library).

An even bigger coincidence occurred earlier today -- a researcher contacted me today via e-mail inquiring about Julius Helms -- just hours after I found new information online. Helms was one of a handful of surnames I checked last night.

In response to a question posed by Jessica at Jessica's Genejournal blog regarding a free, online Michigan death record project at the Library of Michigan, I found a tutorial describing how to search for the death records and that only a tiny fraction of records are currently online.
