A Backus And Powell Connection In Massachusetts?

Source

"He [Dr. Whiting*] was a surgeon of Col. Miles Powell's regiment in which twenty men from Great Barrington, under Capt. Roswell Downing, enlisted from July 19 to August 23, 1779." [Source]

*John Backus, Jr., was Dr. William Whiting's uncle by marriage.

Note: My grandkids are descendants of Miles Powell on their paternal side; they also have 3 ancestors named John Backus, a father, son and grandson (none of them are the John Backus mentioned above; all are descendants of William Backus the immigrant) on their maternal line.

Miles P. Squier

The miscellaneous writings of Miles P. Squier ... with an autobiography:

LATE PROFESSOR OP INTELLECTUAL AND MORAL PHILOSOPHY,

BELOIT COLLEGE, WISCONSIN.

"I was born, in Cornwall, Vermont, May 4th, 1792; being the second son and child of Wait and Hannah Squier. My parents were of English descent, and natives of Berkshire Co., Mass. My father was the third son of Andrew Squier, of Lanesboro, Mass., through whom the family is traced to Waterbury, and that region in Connecticut. My mother's maiden name was Hannah Powell: she was the fourth daughter of Miles Powell, whose name I inherit. He was a man of some distinction in his day, and the Colonel of a regiment of
Berkshire Militia, in the well-known Bennington battle in the war of the Revolution : that beginning of victories in behalf of the American standard, which had so much influence on the great issue pending, and on the liberties of the world."

"It was indeed a privilege to visit the death-bed of Mr. Squier. It was not a scene of melancholy gloom, of doubt, of distrust, of alarm, or of apathy or indifference. It was not the scene so often witnessed, of a clinging to earth, and of an unwillingness to be torn from it ; it was one of peaceful, contented, happy resignation to the Divine will, under the conviction that this sickness was to be his last; nay, it was a scene of joyful hope in Christ and assurance of heaven, and desire to be freed from the incumbrance of an earthly tabernacle. One day he said, 'Why should I be confined to this little speck of earth when I may soon have the freedom of the universe?"'

From this site:

Miles Powell Squier... (May 4th, 1792- June 22nd, 1866) Pastor of 1st Presbyterian Church from (3 May, 1816- 1 January 1824).
Born in Cornwall, VT, the second child of Wait Squier and Hannah Powell Squier, who were both of English decent and natives of Berkshire County, MA, they were married in 1790. He was one of three sons and three daughters who survived into adulthood, the names of his siblings were Wait, Jr., Calvin, Laura, Lorinda, Aurelia, and Huldana, Laura and Lorinda.  His parents, Wait Sr. and Hannah Powell Squier moved to New Haven, CT in 1794 where the elder Wait Squier took up farming.
While living in Buffalo on 22 February, 1820, he married his wife, Catherine Seymour (8 October, 1792 – 6 December, 1873), then of Rome, NY, but who was born in Hartford, CT. Miles and Catherine had no children.

Col. Miles Powell, Who Participated In This Country's Struggle For Independence

"Miles Powell turned out at the Lexington Alarm." "He commanded Berkshire county troops at Bennington and served in frontier defense during Tryon's invasion," according to information submitted to the DAR by Mrs. Aurelia Henry Russell.

Who was Miles Powell? The son of Robert & Anne (Goodrich) Powell "...he settled in Lanesboro, Massachusetts, as early as 1759," according to this publication. Most of what is known of Miles Powell is through his descendants.

Miles Powell is the 6th great-grandfather of my grandchildren, through his daughter, Hannah, who married Wait Squier. Another Hannah Powell & Wait Squier descendant was their son, Miles Powell Squier, whose biography can be seen here at Wikipedia. The wife of Michigan Senator (and Governor) Russell A. Alger is also a descendant of Wait & Hannah Squier.

Miles Powell was also the father of Rachel, who married William Lampson. A portrait of Rachel Powell Lampson, daughter of Colonel Miles & Jemima Powell, painted by Gilbert Stuart can be seen on Footnote (which also has much more information about William Lampson, including a portrait).

Another daughter, Ruth, married Winthrop Noble. Daughter Elizabeth married Seth Wheeler.

Other children were Miles (Jr.), Jemima, Irena, Calvin, David and Daniel.

The family of Daniel Powell, son of Miles, Jr., can be found here.

Miles Powell's gravestone can be seen here; he and his wife, Jemima, are buried in the Lanesborough Center Cemetery in Berkshire County, Massachusetts.
