Church Co-Founded By John Backus

From the Livingston County News: South Livonia’s ‘Little White Church’ to celebrate bicentennial (published 2016):

"It is often quoted, “When God is in it – it works.” Surely then, God was in it when a small group of people gathered at the home of *Timothy Baker in 1816. That group of people included a man named John Backus and together they formed a church called the South Livonia Baptist Society. In 1833 the congregation built a church that still stands in the same location today. Two hundred years from the first gathering in 1816 the church, now called South Livonia United Church of Christ, is preparing to celebrate its anniversary. One of the church’s currently active members, **Eleanor Wood Trescott, will be there. She is the great-great-great niece of John Backus."

Lieutenant Thomas Tracy is another ancestor of mine who was also in the Dana Converse Backus ancestry.  Thomas Tracy's son, Jonathan, had a daughter, Mary*, who married Benjamin Parish.

Also of note: Matthew Marvin (also in the book) was my son-in-law's ancestor, through his daughter, Sarah Marvin.

Per the census information, John Backus was born in Columbia County and resided in city or town 39 years; Johanna Backus was born in Massachusetts, resided there 3 years.

Living next to John and Johanna were John's son, Clinton T. Backus, age 28, who was born in Livingston County and lived there for 28 years; Clinton's mother-in-law (he was a widower in 1855), Catherine Groesbeck, age 58, who resided there for 4 years (she was born in Rensselaer County); and Clinton's son, Manson F. Backus, age 2, who was born in Livingston County, New York.

Chloe Powell, who was born in Vermont, was on John Backus's other side.

Also living nearby was George Kennady, born in Ontario Co., age 44, who lived there 16 years.  George was married to (Welthy) L. (Lucina) Baker, daughter of Timothy and Philena (Powell) Baker.  Philena was also living in the Kennady household.  Timothy Baker was John Backus's uncle.

Gifford Nash, age 46, born in Cayuga Co., who was Philena (Powell) Baker's son from her first marriage also lived nearby.

Edmund Hobart - A Possible Ancestor

Biographical information about Edmund Hobart found in Representative Men and Old Families of Southeastern Massachusetts ...  Hobart is my ancestor IF his daughter, Rebecca, was Edward Bangs' wife.  Apparently the jury is still out on that one.... .

(I) Edmund Hobart, from Hingham, in the County of Essex, England, and born that parish about 1570, came to this country, arriving in 1633 at Charlestown, and with his son, Thomas, and several others, came to "Bare Cove" the same year probably for the purpose of assisting in establishing a new plantation... .
He was an early settler of Hingham, one of those who drew their home lots on Town (North street) Sept 18, 1635.  He married first, Margaret Dewey, who was the mother of his children, and second, Oct 10, 1634, Mrs. Sarah Lyford, widow of Rev John.

Rebecca Hobart was in Merryann Palmer's tree  -- I attended a meeting of a genealogy club in Mission, Texas, that she and her husband organized.  Small world!
