William Davis From The Cowdalls

Davis families of early Roxbury and Boston, by Samuel Forbes ... Rockwell, Samuel Forbes, 1878-

Lot F42 granted to William Davis the locksmith in 1638 was bought by his son, William the gunsmith, from the Cowdalls, and he in turn sold it 27 (4) 1646 to William Blantaine, as recorded in Book of Possessions, page 35 (95) as follows: CO 27 (4) 1646... .

In the records of the Selectmen, p. 52 (41), 30 d. 1 mo. 1640 there is this note: Also William Davis, gunsmyth, hath granted him a great Lott of 20 Acrs at the Mount, upon the usual Covenant for such Lotts. We have made no attempt to trace this land. It is to be noted that William the locksmith had a house lot granted him in 1638. He died in 1643-4 leaving a son, William the gunsmith. Which of the two was granted the above twenty acres we are unable to say with certainty as locksmith and gunsmith both may have been titles of the elder William.

With reference to the court proceedings whereby William, the son whom we call the gunsmith, obtained title to his father's property, we may note one or two peculiarities in the court papers. In the deed dated July 1645, but not recorded until 1658, three pieces of land are specified. All three were sold by the Cowdells to William Davis the gunsmith in one deed. (Source)

Samuel Sprague Killed With Fannin

Coleman County, Texas
Deed# A-236 [Image 205]
24 August 1854

State of Pennsylvania
County of Allegheny

Know that I, William P. Sprague by letter of attorney...appointed Darwin M. Stapp of Victoria County and State of Texas...to settle with the Govt. of Texas all matters pertaining to the claim and interests...in consideration of the services to my deceased brother Samuel Sprague who was killed with Fannin in the Army of the State Republic of Texas...

Deposition by John Wood in support of William Sprague's claim (A-239).  Wood stated that "his [Samuel Sprague's) mother was my sister...".  Samuel Sprague left Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in 1834.  [Wood] saw letters in Samuel's handwriting dated from Texas. His last letter was written about three days before he expected to in battle (he was in the Army of Texas under Captain Fanning).  It was rumored that Samuel was taken prisoner and shot.  His mother, my sister, married Samuel Sprague, Sr., by whom she had two children (Samuel and William).  Both parents of Samuel and William are dead. Samuel was never married.  Capt. John Wood, Sr.

H.R. Runnels, Governor, granted the heirs of Samuel Sprague 960 acres of land (A-242) in Coleman County on the waters of Hords/Home Creek (also Jim Ned Creek)

Petitts In Grimsby

Source

From Déliberations Et Mémoires de la Société Royale Du Canada:

Jonathan and Deborah Pettit lived in the State of Pennsylvania. Part of their land was in New Jersey. There were two sons, Andrew and Nathaniel. *Andrew married Sarah Smith in 1780, and in 1787, with wife and four children, started for British territory.

His brother Nathaniel lived on a farm between Grimsby and Beamsville. He owned the land on which Grimsby now stands. Nathaniel Pettit owned lot No 9 in the first and lot No 9 in the second concession.

From the Grimsby Museum:

"This Indenture of Land  [see Indenture online] was made between *Andrew and Sarah Pettit and their son Jonathan A. Pettit on August 17, 1814.  Lot 14, Concession I & II, 160 acre lot."

Try To Match The Signatures

In order to help prove that the William Howard whose signature below is the same William Howard who lived in Grimsby Township, I would like to compare this signature to one on deeds from Hastings County (Ontario) signed by a William Howard of Grimsby Township (Ontario, Canada).

Source - Upper Canada Land Petition

Some information about the Hastings County deed is posted (or linked) on my In Deeds blog (there are actually two signed by William Howard listed in an abstract of Hasting County deeds). A copy of the deed, with the presumed signature, has not yet been obtained.
