Great-Aunt Ruth

Ruth E. Johnson was raised by her aunt, Bertie (Rice) Powers, after Ruth's mother, Katie (Rice) Johnson died around the time of Ruth's birth. Four-year-old Ruthie Johnson was living in the Jasper and Bertie Powers household in 1910 and was properly identified as their niece.  In 1920 Ruth was enumerated in the census as the daughter of the childless couple.

In 1930 Ruth and her husband at the time, W. Homer Paschall, were living in Pontiac, Michigan, with their three-year-old daughter, Patricia.  Ruth went to Michigan for a temporary nursing assignment that turned into a permanent change in her life. Other changes included a divorce and a marriage to Gilbert Smith.

Part of Patricia's childhood was spent dividing her time between living with Bertie, her mother's guardian, in Illinois, and living with her mother in Michigan.  I do not remember ever meeting Ruth, but I did get a chance to visit with Patricia.  Ruth's sister, Katie (Johnson) Garrett Daniel (my grandmother), occasionally flew from Texas, stopped by my childhood home, and then went to visit her siblings in Michigan, including Ruth.

Ruth died in 1964 and was Ottawa Park Cemetery according to her memorial at FindAGrave.

It would be helpful to know what month and day was Ruth born and where was she born (Illinois or Arkansas), in order to find out more about Ruth's mother (my great-grandmother), Katie (Rice) Johnson.

Elvira Elizabeth Johnson's Family

At the request of a Graves Family Association representative who wanted an update on the Graves descendants of James and Nancy (Graves) Johnson, I worked on this family in order to proved the Association with an update.

Elvira Elizabeth Johnson was born on 6 May 1864, to James and Nancy (Graves) Johnson.  She m (1) Benjamin F. Rice (1862-1900) 11 Nov. 1884, m (2) Hampton B. Lamont, c. 1905.  She d. 10 Oct. 1932.

Kansas City On The Mural

Elvira (then of Kansas City, Missouri in 1918) was the first-listed heir of James Johnson on the document found here.

Elvira E. Johnson and her first husband, Benjamin F. Rice, had a daughter, Gertrude.  [Note:  We are related to Gertrude Rice through her mother and her father.  Elvira and my great-grandfather, James Dudley Johnson, were siblings.  Benjamin F. Rice was a 1st cousin 3x removed; Ransom and Ann (Hinds) Rice were our mutual ancestors.]

Gertrude married Fred J. Patterson and had four children (Elizabeth, Thomas, Frederick and Frank). Elvira Elizabeth (Johnson) Rice Lamont was living with her daughter and son-in-law in 1920.

Elvira's daughter Gertrude and granddaughter Elizabeth were living in Harrisburg in 1940:

United States Census, 1940
Name Elizabeth Patterson
Harrisburg, Harrisburg Township, Saline, Illinois
Marital Status Divorced
Last Place of Residence Cairo, Alexander, Illinois
HOUSEHOLD
Gertrude Patterson Head F 54 Illinois
Elizabeth Patterson Daughter F 34 Illinois
T J Patterson Brother-in-law  M 18 Illinois

Gertrude (Rice) Patterson died in 1945.  Her Find-A-Grave memorial included an obituary.  The obituary stated that she had recently learned that her eldest son, Captain Tom Patterson, had been held as a POW in Japan and was freed.  Her sons Fred and Frank were employed by a coal mining company and her daughter, Elizabeth Cozby operated the Cozby Printing Company.  David Patterson and Tom Patterson were the only two grandchildren.

It appeared as though Elizabeth (Patterson) Cozby was married to Paul Henry Cozby who died in 1944.  Per her brother Tom's obituary, she was identified as Elizabeth Kerrigan of Benson, Arizona, in 1990.

Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas David Patterson (the former POW) married E. Eames Harrison.  He died in Florida and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.  No children were listed in his obituary.

This form stated that Harvey Rude died November 18th, 1861, of either typhoid fever or pneumonia.

Eliza Rude's mother, the widow, Elizabeth (Baker) Rude, married Leonidas S. Hinds.

Adaline Stricklin was a witness for the pension application.

John Johnson And No Further

I have not gotten past John Johnson, my 3rd great grandfather, in my Johnson family research.  The Johnson line ended with my grandmother, Katherine, who married James H. Garrett.

Here's my first post about looking for John Johnson's roots.

John Johnson was born about 1793 in Georgia (possibly Pulaski County, but that's just a guess).  He married Mary (Polly) Greer, of Greene County, Georgia, about 1814.  The Johnsons also lived in Wilson County, Tennessee.  They were in Gallatin County, Illinois [enumerated in the 1840 census], probably between 1829 and 1832, based upon the ages and birthplace of children Elizabeth and Lucy.  In a Saline County, Illinois, history, John and Polly Johnson were named as James' parents.

United States Census, 1850
Eagle, Gallatin, Illinois, United States
Household Gender Age Birthplace
John Johnson M 56  Georgia
Mary Johnson F 57  Virginia
Elijah Johnson M 15  Illinois
Nancy J Johnson F 12  Illinois
James Johnson M 10  Illinois
Martin Johnson M 9  Illinois
Rebecca Greer  F 70  Virginia

I've poked around Georgia records, but am I looking for a James, an Elijah, a John or possibly a Martin (or something else) as a given name for John Johnson's father?  When and where was John Johnson's father born?  I have no idea.
