St. Leger To Sullenger?

This name has been thought to be a form of the English name St. Leger, according Forks of Elkhorn Church", Darnell, Ermina Jett, Baltimore, MD, USA: Genealogical Publishing Co., 2002.

Where Ambrose Maulding Settled

Petitions of the early inhabitants of Kentucky... mentioned Ambrose Mauldin.

Ambrose Mauldin may have also been known as Ambrose Maulding.  Ambrose Maulding was born on August 1, 1755, and died August 26, 1833, per the request in the Revolutionary War pension files below.

            THE COURSE of human events often brings colorful personalities and rich backgrounds of history to a particular locality.  Such was the case in the settlement of two Revolutionary War soldiers, Ambrose Maulding and Francis Dollarhide...[who settled on] this little prairie...destined to become in 1821 a part of Hamilton County, Illinois.
       
              About 1780, James Maulding and his wife and sons Morton, Ambrose...[settled in] Logan County, Kentucky.  There they established Maulding’s Station, sometimes called Red River, or Old Station.  Before that time Ambrose and Morton had helped to establish Kasper’s or Gasper’s Station in Tennessee.

In Kentucky, on May 23, 1806, Mourning Maulding, daughter of Ambrose, was united in marriage to John Anderson. [Note: Their daughter, Eliza Anderson, married Alexander Sullenger, who was my half 3rd great uncle]

As promised, I promised I will give you all the information I can obtain in regard to my father's service in the American Revolution.  His name was James Sullenger, his Captain's name was Peter O'Neal and from the best information I can get his Cols name Galiphy, his home was in Orange County...North Carolina.  I know that he drew a pension for several years before he died he was born Dec. 31, 1760, and [died] *July 10, 1846. ..... [a letter from A. T. Sullenger in support of Sarah Bailey Sullenger's widow's application for a pension]

Mary (Polly) Trousdale, wife of John S. Patillo

Identifying Mary (Polly) Trousdale's family tree has not been a straight-forward process. I first sought a Miss Polly Sullenger who married my ancestor, John S. Patillo (and was my 4^th great-grandmother). After finding reference to Alexander Sullenger as John Patillo's step-son in a Hamilton Co., Illinois county history, it was assumed that Polly was first married to a Sullenger. Another publication "Early Pioneer Gravestones of Pope County, Illinois" stated that Polly was married to James Sullenger and also mentioned that Polly's maiden name was Trousdale. It was then determined that Polly was the daughter of Alexander Trousdale (b. 1766) [not to be confused with other Alexander Trousdales] and Fannie Clendenin. Alexander Trousdale checked out, but what about Fannie Clendenin?

A NEGHS article (search page for article) stated that Polly's parents were Alexander & Fannie (Clendenin) Trousdale, which left the impression that Polly's mother was Miss, not Mrs. Clendenin. I no longer believe that is the case. While first researching that angle, however, the general belief (as I remember it) was that Fannie Clendenin was the daughter of Lieutenant John Clendenin. My research concluded that Mary (Fannie) Clendenin was Lieutenant John Clendenin's widow, not his daughter. The article also stated that Polly Trousdale married Patrick Dolan before she married James Sullenger, which was news to me.
