A Few Indexed Ingham County Probate Records
Mary E. Shaw ...I looked in the Archives of Michigan for probate documents concerning her estate (especially wanted to find a list of heirs). There was nothing on record for Mary E. Shaw or her husband John, but a different (and unrelated) Mary Shaw had a probate file on record.
The Archives of Michigan has a handy binder with finding aids (the archivist on duty pulled the binder for me). For Ingham County, Michigan, probate folders (not on microfilm) are not indexed alphabetically, but each file number has the corresponding name listed in the binder.

How And Why I Started Researching My Great-Grand Uncle's 1st Wife's 3rd Husband
The twists and turns of a typical search or how I got from here to there!
As I was browsing posts in the Google Reader, the updated online databases at FamilySearch.org were mentioned. Hmmm....time to check out the list. The update that caught my eye was Illinois probate but it was too labor intensive at that late hour, so I landed on Minnesota instead (no, I wasn't playing Monopoly). After finding a couple of miscellaneous items, I started searching for Ingeborg Peterson in Minnesota. Ingeborg was married to my great granduncle, Harry Gilman Powers, as his 2nd wife.
Hmmm...perhaps it was time to search at GenealogyBank.com for information about Uncle Harry's first wife, Lillian Cramer*. Issues of the Flint [Michigan] Journal newspaper are online there and browsing through issues of the Journal is one of my favorite pasttimes. It was late and getting later, but what the heck.
Lillian, who married Harry G. Powers in 1898, married John Baird in 1901**. Lillian wasn't done marrying yet. On February 19, 1908, she married David Delton Foerch*** (whom she later divorced). Foerch struck me as an interesting and fairly unusual surname. David Foerch was born in Canada and his mother was a Butler; was there a connection to Butler's Rangers? Inquiring minds want to know.
My search has taken me way beyond the parameters of the Powers genealogy, but has now piqued my interest. Could I justify continuing with David Foerch because the Butlers might take me back to the Niagara Peninsula where my Powers family used to live? Okay, I'll go with that.

I've Got The Date Of Death But No Obituary In Sight
After searching for information about John C. and Mary E. Shaw in the Kent County, Michigan, deeds, at the Library of Michigan [see In Deeds Kent Co., MI, post], I looked for an obituary in The State journal (Lansing, Mich.) microfilm, found in the catalog here.
Mary E. Shaw, a resident of Leslie, Ingham County, Michigan, died December 26, 1911; the editions of the State Journal from December 13, 1911 to January 1, 1912, are not on the above described microfilm (I physically checked the cabinet(s) and also scoured the film to be re-shelved; the catalog confirmed it).
Do the missing issues even exist? If so, where are they housed? Did another newspaper possibly publish an obituary for Mary E. Shaw? Right now, I don't know.
I remember reading a blog entry recently (can't remember whose, sorry) where the researcher found an obituary about 8 days after the date of death. So with that in mind, I went through a few 1912 January issues, but found nothing (glad I looked, though).
After a cursory look through the cabinets in the "newspaper" microfilm room at the Library of Michigan, no other newspapers that might have Mary's obituary jumped out at me.
The "other" microfilm room had about 9 rolls of microfilm with the town and township of Leslie (Ingham Co., MI); records that I left on the shelf unexplored. Probably no obits in the town and/or township records, but perhaps some other pertinent information...?
