Before The Grocery Store Belonged To Grandma

Wenn's Grocery Served Area's Needs Despite Depression:

Swartz Creek News - 23 April 2000

...a lot of customers would walk across Corunna Road from Kelly Airfield located south of the gas station....
....Wenns sold the store in 1933

Dad And Grandma At The Store Entrance

The note that was added indicated that there is still a gas station there.  Well, yes, but in the interim my grandmother's store (attached to the family home) was at that location. During the 1960's (and probably most of the 1950's) there were no gas pumps and the storefront was vacated (it made an awesome playroom for us), but the house was still intact.  Some time after my grandfather's death, my grandmother sold the property to a gas company.  It was then that the house was bulldozed and a new gas station was built.  A car dealership is currently across the street (a field of corn was there during my childhood).

Note: Posted on Grandma's Birthday (July 4, 1900)

Crapo's Farm And A Native American Cemetery

Governor Henry Howland Crapo bought Gaines Township land in 1860 according to Wikipedia.

Diverse group shares goal: Save burial ground (an article by Elizabeth Shaw, published in the Flint Journal, Monday, May 3, 2004)

GAINES TWP. ...Today, Friends and Descendants of Native American Cemeteries is breathing new life into a decades-long effort to save a well-known but long-neglected American Indian burial ground.

Swartz Creek Area Historical Society records indicate the burial ground existed long before 1860, when former Michigan Gov. Henry Crapo founded a dairy empire outside what had been Miller's Settlement.

Beatrice And The Most Handsome Man In Flint

Beatrice Cameron and her friend Suzanne met "the most handsome man in Flint*" at a local fair some time before May 29, 1924, Beatrice's wedding day.

In 1923, Beatrice was a machine operator at the Marvel Carburetor Company and lived at 609 Warren Avenue in Flint, Michigan.  Beatrice's future husband, Ralph N. Powers, was an auto worker who lived on South Saginaw Street, right in the heart of the City of Flint,

When Beatrice was born on July 4, 1900, in Arenac County, Michigan, Ralph was almost four years old and living in Battle Creek.

What Happened To George F. Brooks?

Photo:
Photo Taken In Lapeer County, Michigan

George Brooks' marriage to Clara Powers was April 19, 1882, in Lapeer County.  He was listed as working on the railroad. Both were living in Dryden, Michigan.  Rena Davis and Daniel C. Bacon, both of Dryden, Lapeer County, Michigan, were the witnesses.

Age (Expanded) 45 years
Birth Year 1837
Birthplace England
Spouse's Name Clara Powers
Spouse's Age (Expanded) 24 years
Spouse's Birth Year 1858
Spouse's Birthplace Ontario
Event Date 24 Mar 1882
Event Place Dryden, Lapeer, Michigan

In the 1894  State of Michigan Census taken in Lapeer County, George Brooks' birth year was listed as 1830; the marriage record indicated 1837. "Harriet's" [Clara?] birth year was 1865 whereas the marriage record listed Clara's birth year as 1858, which matched other documents for Clara.  The girls are Clara's daughters.

1894 MI Census - Lapeer Co., Village of Dryden
Brooks, George, 64, husband, ENG ENG ENG 11 yrs in MI; U.S.
Brooks, Harriet, 29, wife, 3children/2living, CAN CAN CAN 13 yrs in MI; U.S.
Brooks, Lucy, 9, daughter, MI ENG CAN
Brooks, Cornelia, 6, daughter, MI ENG CAN

By November of 1896, Clara was still Mrs. Clara E. Brooks, though living in the adjacent county of Genesee.

The 1899 Flint City Directory included the following entry:  BROOKS, Clara E. (wid George F.), res 150(0) Fenton.

George Brooks' death record was not found in the 1897-1920 Michigan death records.

Clara (Powers) Brooks and Allen Sincerbeaux applied for a marriage license (which was uncompleted and crossed out, stating "am unable to make/use this license) on 23 Oct 1899, in Flint, Genesee Co., Michigan. When and where did they actually get married -- or did they? Was George Brooks still alive, making the license invalid?

Cornelia Brooks was listed as Allen Sincerbeaux's step-daughter, and "Carrie E. (Clara) as his wife in the 1900 census.

Lucy Brooks was living as a boarder in a household where Lola Sincerbeaux (Allen's daughter) was a servant in 1900.   In November of 1900 Lola Sincerbeaux married Clara's brother, John Powers.

Clara (Powers) Brooks Sincerbeaux's obituary indicated that she was survived by two daughters (Lucy and Cornelia).

New York, Probate Records, Livingston Wills 1845-1861 vol 3:

Ralph N. Powers' 4 Generation Chart

Ralph Newman Powers' profile at Wikitree and the dynamic tree view here.  He's my paternal grandfather.

Ralph N. Powers

Ralph N. Powers was born in Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1896.  Why his parents moved there is a mystery to me.  Ralph's mother, Addie More, was born (1864) and raised in Lapeer County, Michigan. Although she died at the home of her daughter, Addie Mae (Powers) Allen, in California (1947), she was buried in Thornville Cemetery in Lapeer.

William S. Powers was born in Grimsby, Ontario, Canada (1859).  He and Addie More married in Lapeer on 25 April 1888. Their (adult) children were Ward, Ralph, Addie Mae, Cynthia June, and Marion Garrison Powers.  After William's death (1939), his widow continued to live with her youngest son, Marion, in Flint, Michigan.

John Powers (born in 1834 in Canada or possibly Ireland) married 1st Mary Agnes Kennedy (1834-1908), of Ontario, Canada.  They were the parents of Clara Estelle, William, John E., James A.,  and Harry G. Powers, who were all born in Canada, Harry being the possible exception.  John married again; that record provided the names (Michael Powers and Mary McGovern) of John's Irish parents who moved to Canada.

Mary Agnes and John Powers

Mary Agnes was the daughter of David Kennedy and Ann Howard.  The Kennedy's children also included Wilber, Melissa, Howard, and probably others.  Ann was the daughter of William Howard and Mary (LNU).  I don't know the identity of David Kennedy's ancestors.

Addie (More) Powers was the daughter of James More and Cynthia Richmond.  Other More children included John Frank, James Levi, Ward B., Charles Austin, and Mary. James was born in Scotland about 1815 and died in Lapeer in 1870.  James' parents were William More and Margaret Norrie according to family tradition.  Cynthia (1829-1912) was the daughter of Thomas P. Richmond and Laura Backus. Cynthia's known siblings were Almina and Emory.

From POW To Tawas Lighthouse Keeper

Lighthouse Stairs [Not Tawas Bay Lighthouse]

From the Patriot War:

Excerpts from the narrative above: "Chauncey Sheldon, a Macomb County farmer, joined the fray and was taken prisoner in Canada.  Saved from execution by flashing a Masonic sign, he was transported to Van Diemen's Land instead.  After his return to Michigan he became a lighthouse keeper at Tawas Bay.  He then lived with his daughter, Mrs. Daniel Duncan in Macomb County, Michigan.  Mr. Sheldon died in Genesee County, Michigan, about 1855."
