From an Orlando, Florida, newspaper, dated ca May 2, 1953:


OAKLAND, MRS. BEVERLY--Funeral services for Mrs. Beverly Oakland, age 59, of 518 Delaney St., who died Wednesday evening April 29th will be held at the Fairchild Chapel, 2 p.m. Saturday May 2nd.
Mrs. Oakland was a resident of Orlando 15 years, was a member of the Christian Science Church and a former member of O.E.S.  She is survived by three sons, Fred Shillicutt, Orlando, Joseph Shillicutt, Wichita, Kan. and Richard Shillicut, Springfield, Mo.; mother, Mrs. Laura B. Morris, Orlando; four sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Martin; Shenandoah, Iowa, Mrs. Mildred LeBon, Mrs. Josephine Stuckie and Miss Jane Britton, all of Orlando.  Also six grandchildren.  Fairchild Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements, interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

 In 1850 George H. Rood was living with his parents (father Orvis) and siblings in Lapeer County, Michigan.  Hellen Thomas was also in Lapeer and living with her parents, Harvey and Betsey and her siblings in 1850.

In 1860 George Rood was single and living at home with his mother, Almina, his brother, Alpheus, and sisters Diantha and Martha.  Hellen was still in Lapeer as well in 1860.

An obituary for Donald Beathon can be found here. Additional details in the obit include his marriage to Miss Essie Anna D. Johnston in Rock Island, Illinois, on October 6, 1864. He went to New York alone at age 13 and then onto Illinois. He opened a business in Traverse City, Michigan, and later moved to Larned, Kansas and then to Foote (now Gray Co.). At his death, his son Norman lived in Black Lake, Idaho.

Major Henry Z. Curtis & Baxter Springs

The victims of the Baxter Springs massacre who were buried near Fort Blair were re-interred here. Major Henry Z. Curtis's name is on the statue; though a newspaper account of his funeral stated that his body was brought home to Keokuk, Iowa, and buried there.

Henry Curtis, his wife*, Julia, and infant son were found in a genealogy of his mother's Buckingham family. His infant son, Henry Z. Curtis, Jr., died 2 days after his birth on February 1, 1863, in Keokuk, Iowa. His widow, Julia Dudley (Courtis/Courtes**) Curtis, sister of Lt. Frank Courtis, married 2nd Andrew Baird in 1870, as was living in California. *Maiden name given as Dudley on the marriage record; **In Julia's affidavit to restore her widow's pension, she gave her maiden name as "Courtes" but stated that her parents died when she was very young and was raised by Col. Ambrose & Clara Dudley in Cincinnati, Ohio, therefore was married under her adopted name of Dudley. Cara Curtis, Henry Z.'s sister, lived with his widow Julia in California.

Henry Zarah Curtis was mentioned in the "Illustrated history of Nebraska:...". Ft. Zarah was named in his honor. He was living in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska, in 1860.

Henry was living with his parents, Samuel & Belinda Curtis, in Keokuk, Lee Co., Iowa, in 1850.

Alvord Letter Regarding Mr. Hickey

Brother Joseph,

In your late letters to me you state Mr. Hickey is not trustworthy as a teacher of the Law. Will you point out in what respect you know him not to be trustworthy. Please give me and my wife the things you know. If he is an imposter tell us the particulars.

When I was in western Kansas he came out (and) got us to sell our farm and move to Independence, Mo., and we came here and settled. He has not baptized me but baptized my wife. Please give us the facts as you know them.
