A Respectful Look At Henry Dodge

"For two centuries the family of Tristram Dodge, who landed on Block Island (off Rhode Island) in 1661, prospered from its instinct of migration. Its trail winds throughout the land, marked by Indian wars, exploits in frontier settlements, and a decoration for Israel Dodge from General George Washington for heroic action in the Battle of Brandywine. The record gained new strength with Henry Dodge, born to Israel and his wife, Nancy Ann Hunter, six years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence."

"The date was October 12, 1782, and he was the first white child born in what is now Indiana. An Indian chief of the Piankeshaw, seeing the baby, threatened to kill him. But Moses Henry, a manufacturer of arms, in whose house Henry Dodge was born, saved him by telling the chief that the child and mother would not stay there but would soon leave for their home in Kentucky. In gratitude, Nancy Ann named her firstborn after their benefactor, Moses Henry.  Eight years later Israel left his wife, son, and six-year-old daughter at Bardstown (where he had built the first stone house and tavern) to seek adventure and fortune in the Spanish country, in what is now Missouri." Related to Edward Richmond's 2nd wife's [Amy's] father, Henry Bull?  According to the publication above, "Josiah Bull...assumed to have been decended from Henry Bull, sometime Governor of Rhode Island...".

A reference to the J B R book p 79 (The Richmond Family, 1594-1896, and Pre-American Ancestors, 1040-1594), regarding Richmond descendant Abigail, was found in the Bull lineage book:

Personal Legal Travails Of Edward Richmond

An interesting analysis regarding Edward Richmond from The Transatlantic Constitution: Colonial Legal Culture and the Empire, by Mary Sarah Bilder (Note: This is one of the few sources I've used that is not a free book.):

"Men without such strong family connections acquired their legal skills through observation and participation."  "The personal legal travails of Edward Richmond provided him entry into the legal world."

• 1650's Edward Richmond planned to marry Abigail Davis
• Abigail Davis's family pressured her into marrying Richard Ussell
• June 1656 Richmond's attorneys were unsuccessful in suing Ussell for trespass
• Edward Richmond initially lost the suit, but gained legal knowledge
• Richmond's attorneys proposed a more successful argument against Ussell and Abigail Davis's step-father, John Cowdall.  Richmond received monetary damages, but Abigail remained married.
• After the General Assembly was petitioned, the Abigail Davis/Richard Ussell marriage was declared unlawful
• A 40 shilling monetary damage was levied against both Edward Richmond and Abigail Davis for living together and conceiving a child
• In June 1658, Edward and Abigail were married

Edward Richmond was serving as a "general solicitor and general attorney" in the 1660's

Note: My (presumed) ancestor, Edward Richmond, married 2nd, Amy Bull, daughter of Henry Bull who was the Governor of Rhode Island.

Newport has a glorious and precious heritage in the memory of Oliver Hazard Perry, and although born in South Kingstown, R.I., August 23d, 1785, he seems peculiarly our own, for in Newport he was baptized, educated, and married; with Newport men he sailed to victory upon Lake Erie; and in the Island cemetery at Newport he lies buried.

Mrs. Nicholas Easton Who Was Also Mrs. Henry Bull

Henry Bull's daughter, Amy, married my presumed ancestor, Edward Richmond, as his 2nd wife.  Anne Clayton Easton would have been Amy's step-mother.

From the biography of Nicholas Easton...

Easton was a tanner, from Wales, reached New England 14 May, 1634, with his sons, Peter and John. After living one year in Ipswich, where he was deputy to the General Court, he moved to Newbury.

...Easton left the colony...[and] soon settled at Newport. Here he resided until his death, in 1675, aged 83. He also built the first house in Newport, became a prominent man in Rhode Island, was a large landholder, and has numerous descendants.

Anne Clayton, the second wife of Nicholas, after his death married Henry Bull, who was twice governor of Rhode Island, in 1685 and 1689. He died in 1693, aged 84. The Eastons, Bull, and many leading men of Rhode Island, were Quakers.

Who Destroyed The Gaspee?

The proceedings of the General Assembly, relative to the destruction of the British schooner Gaspee, in the waters of Narragansett Bay on the night of 9th June 1772, will be found in the records of the August session of year. [Source]

The Gaspee Organization makes the case that Barzillai Richmond (and his son and son-in-law)  participated in "the 1772 burning of the hated British revenue schooner, HMS Gaspee, by Rhode Island patriots as America's 'First Blow for Freedom'TM."
