An Inventory of the Feris (George A.) Family Papers....is held at the Texas State Library and Archives.  Below is an excerpt:

"Achille Feris was the second child and oldest son of George and Lavinia Feris. He went to school in Velasco, Texas, in the 1850s. At the age of eighteen, Achille joined the Confederate army and served in the 8th Texas Cavalry (Terry's Texas Rangers) in the Civil War; after the war ended, he joined his brother Yandell in his surveying business."

Civil War Diaries and Personal Narratives included a photo of Achilles Ferris.


My ex-brother-in-law's 1st great grand uncle:

"...James Howard Bush, died of typhoid fever as a member of the Eighth Texas Cavalry, also known as Terry's Texas Rangers, in Nashville, Tennessee, in November of 1861."

The author George C. Furber, was "engaged in the practice of law in Germantown.., " joined the 'Eagle Guards...' (Company G), after the May 24, 1846, Proclamation by the Governor.

In Texas, "we called at the next house, got some milk but could get no bread; the woman told us that they had to send thirty miles to mill--a horse mill, at that; fifty miles, in another direction, to a blacksmith's shop; forty miles to the nearest post-office, and seventy-five miles to a store, for sugar, coffee, calico; and not even a paper of pins, or a spool of thread, could be got under that distance. Yet her house is fixed upon as the county-seat of Upshur county...".

"Leaving this, we rode on, overtook the wagon, and, by steady traveling, got into the camp at sunset*."

Know that I, William P. Sprague by letter of attorney...appointed Darwin M. Stapp of Victoria County and State of Texas...to settle with the Govt. of Texas all matters pertaining to the claim and interests...in consideration of the services to my deceased brother Samuel Sprague who was killed with Fannin in the Army of the State Republic of Texas...

Deposition by John Wood in support of William Sprague's claim (A-239).  Wood stated that "his [Samuel Sprague's) mother was my sister...".  Samuel Sprague left Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in 1834.  [Wood] saw letters in Samuel's handwriting dated from Texas. His last letter was written about three days before he expected to in battle (he was in the Army of Texas under Captain Fanning).  It was rumored that Samuel was taken prisoner and shot.  His mother, my sister, married Samuel Sprague, Sr., by whom she had two children (Samuel and William).  Both parents of Samuel and William are dead. Samuel was never married.  Capt. John Wood, Sr.

H.R. Runnels, Governor, granted the heirs of Samuel Sprague 960 acres of land (A-242) in Coleman County on the waters of Hords/Home Creek (also Jim Ned Creek)

William V. Richmond's daughter and son-in-law were buried in the prestigious Texas State Cemetery in Austin, Texas.  Mr. O'Reilly was eligible due to a Governor's Proclamation.
