Andrew Millar & Family

Andrew Millar's wife, Jane (More) Millar, was James More's (my great-great grandfather) sister.  James, Cynthia and their children, John F. More, age 18, James Levi More, age 13, Ward B. More, age 11, Charles More, age 8, Addie More, age 5, and Mary More, age 3, were living in Thornville, Lapeer county, Michigan. Also living with the family were Cynthia's mother, Laura (Backus) Richmond, age 60, James' sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Andrew Millar, and the Millar children, George and Peter, who had recently arrived from Great Britain.

(Probably from The) Mining Journal
Date of Death June 27, 1916

Andrew Millar Is Summoned
Deceased Came To America From Scotland 46 Years Ago

Andrew Millar, 80 years of age and a resident of this community over a long period of years, passed away yesterday shortly before noon at the home of his son, Captain George Millar.  The late Mr. Millar was born in Scotland and came to the United States in 1870.  He lived in Lapeer county and Detroit before locating in the Copper Country.  Announcement of Mr. Millar's death was no surprise as his illness dates over the last two years.  His wife passed away a number of years ago.  The deceased was a member of St. Andrew's society and this organization will attend the funeral.  Funeral arrangements had not been completed yesterday although it has been arranged to lay the remains to rest in Lakeside cemetery Hancock.

Andrew Millar, who was former Detroit Mayor Kirkland C. Barker's gardener on Grosse Isle, let his son, Peter, help Mr. Barker and crew as they were preparing for a yacht race in the Detroit River on May 20, 1875.

Barker's racing yacht "Cora" lay at anchor off Stony Island... Aboard the "Mattie" ...were Mr. Barker, Frederick Dudgeon, Manly Webb... and fourteen-year old Peter Miller, son of Mr. Barker's gardener. The "Mattie" capsized; all were thrown overboard and drowned. Peter's body was found floating off Bois Blanc Island May 31 and buried at Anderdon (now part of Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada) that day. (Grosse Isle book "The Deep Roots - Chapter 'A New Era'").

George Millar moved to Houghton county, Michigan (where his father, Andrew, died) and was a fireman at a copper refinery in 1900.  George was a Captain during the Spanish-American War. George was living in Ann Arbor, Michigan, when he died.  He was the last living descendant of Andrew & Jane Millar; George had one child who died as an infant.

Jane (More) Millar probably died in Michigan between 1880 and 1900, although her death record has not been found.  A death record that identified her parents would corroborate that William & Margaret (Norrie) More were both her parents and also the parents of my great-great-grandfather, James More.

An Adoption Story From Houghton Co., Michigan

"Uncle Joe was adopted," said Nana, my son-in-law's 91 year old grandmother. Sure enough, the 1900 census verified that the family's youngest child, Joseph Greene, was, in fact, adopted. He was the 12th child in the family and the adoptive parents would have been over 50 years old.

1900 MI Houghton, Pct #2, Osceola Twp.

", Jessie, dau, Aug 1888, b. MI
", Joseph, adopted son, b. June 1895, b. Don't Know, Don't Know, Don't Know

Now the question; why was he adopted.

According to Nana, an orphanage in the area burned down and families in the area were asked to adopt a child from that orphanage if possible. Her grandparents, Joseph & Julia (Lynch) Greene, were willing to adopt and went to see the children. They spotted a small blond child across the room and started to go over to him. As Julia passed by, another child reached out his little arms, reached for her and said in a plaintive voice, "Mama?". Well, that sealed the deal. Uncle Joe had found his Mama.

Nana said that Uncle Joe died of TB; the same disease that killed his first Mama. He was the only one in the Greene family who contracted TB.

I have not found a record of an orphanage that burned down in Houghton Co., Michigan. Was there more to this story? Was the orphanage in a different county and/or state?

O'Brien Descendants of Mary Kelly of Beara Peninsula, Ireland, and Houghton Co., MI

Mary Kelly, great-great-greatgrandmother of my son-in-law was born in Ireland in 1805 and died in Houghton County, Michigan on December 10, 1880. Some of this information was found on the 1880 census:

1880 Census Franklin, Houghton, Michigan
Joseph GREENE 34 IRE Occ: Miner Fa: IRE Mo: IRE

Her death record found online here provided additional information:

Place of Death: Franklin, Houghton Co., MI

Mother: KELLY, Anna

Now it seems as though that the Greene family was part of a group of copper miners who immigrated from the Beara peninsula of Ireland to the "Copper Country" area of Houghton County, Michigan. A search of the Rootsweb list that focuses on the peninsula corroborated some information that had surfaced during my research.

Widow Greene (nee Mary Kelly) had actually been widowed three times. She and her second husband, Michael O'Brien, had two children, Catherine and Quinlan, half-sister and half-brother of my son-in-law's great-greatgrandfather, Joseph Greene.

Researching the name "Quinlan" seemed easier than researching John or Patrick or... anyway, I found a few items of interest about Mary Kelly Greene's "O'Brien" descendants. At this search site, I found the Quinlan O'Brien family in the 1880 census.

In 1900, Margaret (O'Brien) Ryan and her brothers, Patrick O'Brien and Quin O'Brien, are living in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois on Dearborn Avenue. Margaret was born in April 1870 and died April 23, 1915, in Chicago, and was survived by her husband, Judge Joseph E. Ryan (born Feb 1870 in Fort Dodge, Iowa; died 9 December 1915) and children Joseph, Jr. (ca 17), Quin (ca 14) and Dorothy (ca 11). Margaret O'Brien Ryan's obituary also stated that she was survived by her mother, Mrs. Quinlan O'Brien of Bayard, Iowa, and siblings Quin, Patrick and William.

Margaret (O'Brien) Ryan's son, Quin Ryan, was a "pioneer Chicago radio personality and former manager of WGN-Radio" according to his obituary in the Chicago Tribune published 9 October 1978. His obituary also stated that "he created the first "You Are There" program and was the first announcer to broadcast the Kentucky Derby and the Indianapolis 500." He also covered other historic events including the Scopes trial, the Dempsey-Tunney fights and Knute Rockne's funeral, according to the obit.

Margaret (O'Brien) Ryan's son, Joseph Colman Ryan, was a professor at Notre Dame who died in April 1976.

Margaret (O'Brien) Ryan's daughter, Dorothy (1904-1970), married attorney Paul Denvir. Dorothy is probably the person referenced here. Dorothy's son, Quin, was a Public Defender for the Unabomber.

Nana's MI & Irish Roots

Since Nana (my son-in-law's grandmother) just celebrated her 89th birthday recently, compiling more of her family history for her 90th birthday seemed to be a worthy goal. With perusing the Beara-L Rootsweb archives, [insert Beara; another search is MIHought for Houghton Co., Michigan -choose "Advanced"], there's a reference to Nana's grandparents, James & Mary (Kelly) Green. Much more investigation needs to be done. Here's a website that should help in investigating Nana's Irish roots by R. O'Dwyer.

What's currently researched by me is here. Once back in Michigan, I may research the State Census (if available) and the naturalization papers in the MI Archives.

Here's some extracts from the Houghton Co., MI, directories (ca 1904 & 1910) of surnames of interest to me:
