Susan Wheeler's Will

Sarah Jones, who married James White in 1852 in Jefferson County, Ohio, was probably the daughter of William Jones (born ca 1800 in Pennsylvania) and Susan Styer (Stier/Steer, born ca 1800 in Maryland).  Sarah (Jones) White's Pennsylvania death record listed her parents as William Jones and Susan Jones.  There was a marriage record in Jefferson County, Ohio, for a William Jones and a Susan Styres in an appropriate time frame (8 January 1824).

In 1850 there was a Sarah Jones living in a household in Jefferson County with a Susan Wheeler, of the same age and birthplace as Sarah's mother.  Could Susan Wheeler be the mother of Sarah (Jones) White? Possibly.

I've estimated (guess-timated) that John White was born about 1800 in Scotland; it's unknown to whom he was married.

James White, son of John, was born in Virginia (now West Virginia) and married Sarah Jones in Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio.

Fernando John White married Sophia Albert.  More about the Albert relatives here.  Their primary home was Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

Fernando James White married Amelia Cinderella McFadyen.  More about the McFadyens here and here.  After living in Pittsburgh for many years, they moved to Columbiana County, Ohio, then made another move to Detroit, Michigan, where they lived until they retired to Orlando, Florida.

Fernando J. (Fred) White Died In Orlando, Florida, In 1953

WHITE, MR. FERNANDO JAMES--Funeral services for Mr. Fernando James White, age 75, of 1617 Asher Street, who died at a local hospital, Thursday evening, April 30, 1853, will be held at 2:30 p.m., Monday, May 4 at Fairchild Chapel.  Mr. White had been an Orlando resident six years; member of the Presbyterian Church.  He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Cinderella M. White, Orlando; four daughters, Mrs. C. A. Krantz, Orlando; Mrs. R. S. Palm, and Mrs. Sara Woodward, both of Detroit, Michigan; and Mrs. H. H. Ellis, Winter Park; four sons, E.L. White, Newcomerstown, Ohio; H. C. White, Canton, Ohio; B. C. White, Pinckney, Michigan, and A. B. White, Detroit, Michigan, one brother, Edgar L. White, Pittsburgh, Pa.; two sisters, Mrs. Sadie Clark, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Mrs. Joseph Gasslein, Springfield, Pa.; and 16 grandchildren.  Fairchild Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements with the Rev. James White, A Saddler, Born in Virginia

James White was born on November 28, 1828, in Wellsburg, Virginia, now West Virginia.  He was probably the same James White who died February 18, 1909, in Grove City, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and was the son of John White. 

I believe that the James White enumerated below is my husband's great-great grandfather, because his occupation is "saddler" and he is living in the presumed county of his birth (Brooke).

The 1860 and 1870 censuses below are definitely the census returns of Jim's great-great grandfather, because Jim's grandfather, Fernando, is enumerated with him and Fernando is an unusual name for the Ohio/Pennsylvania area.  James White was born in Virginia (now West Virginia), which is consistent with the James White found in the census below.

In 1860 James White was a "saddler" as he was in the 1850 census above.  In 1870 James White was a "harness maker" and in 1880 he was listed as a saddler again.

Sarah White died March 4, 1897, in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania.  There was a James White, born "June 1830" in Virginia, a widower with no occupation, living with Renwick and Cora (White) Denholm in 1900 in Pittsburgh as a boarder; I believe it is the same James White who is featured on this blog.

Obituary of Amelia Cinderella (McFadyen) White

Mrs. White's obituary was found in the Orlando Sentinel Index at the Orange Co., FL, Public Library.

MRS. AMELIA CINDERELLA WHITE, 77, 1511 Aloma Ave, Winter Park, died Sunday* in a local nursing home. Born in Pennsylvania she moved to Winter Park in 1946 from Detroit, Mich. She was a member of the Winter Park Presbyterian Church, Order of Eastern Star, Order of White Shrine, and a member of the National Federation of Grandmothers Club of America.

Surviving are four sons, Edgar White, Park Ridge, Ill; Harry White, Canton, Ohio; Brandon White, Seattle, Wash.; Albert White, Detroit, Mich.; three daughters, Mrs. Margaret Palm and Mrs. Sara Woodworth of Detroit, Mich.; Mrs. Helen Krantz, Orlando. 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Fairchild Funeral Home is in charge.

A Patent For Fernando White

Fernando White was issued a patent on March 5, 1889, for a gas burner.


Fernando John White was Jim's great-grandfather. Inventiveness runs in his family. Fernando James White, son of the above, worked for Crucible Steel in Pittsburgh until his mettallurgical talents were needed in Detroit.

Jim's brother has several patents, including one found here issued in 1987 (print engine for color electrophotography AKA color laser printer) and a 2007 patent for a 3D stereo browser for the internet.

The Obituary of Elizabeth (Wehner) Albert Meyers

Elizabeth A. (Wehner) Meyer (1823 - 1902) was buried in Homewood Cemetery in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania, with her unmarried daughter, Elizabeth A. Albert (1858 - 1916). Elizabeth Meyer was Jim's maternal great-great grandmother. Elizabeth (Wehner) Meyer married 1st Henry Albert and 2nd Jacob Meyer.

Found on that list were Vernon Woodworth and his wife Betty. Their mutual gravestone was found here, in the Houghton Lake Cemetery, Roscommon Co., MI. Vernon was the ex-husband of Sarah (White) Woodworth, who was Jim's aunt.

Richard S. Palm (1912 - 1997)

Richard Smith Palm was born June 15, 1912, in Waldo, Marion Co., Ohio, to Ernest & Helen (Smith) Palm. He married Margaret Dell White on June 12, 1936, in Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan. My husband, Jim, is the youngest of 5 children, all boys, born to Richard & Margaret.

Richard Palm attended Northwestern High School in Detroit (as did his future wife), where he was almost an Olympic caliber diver. He later went to Michigan State Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University) in Ypsilanti where he was proud of his affiliation with the Arm of Honor fraternity.

Was he also attending Michigan State Normal College when he (with many others) had their picture taken with President Herbert Hoover on the White House lawn? Jim will have to dig out that picture when we return to Michigan.

Richard worked for a bank in the mid 1930's. He then worked for the Ford Motor Company until retirement. His job consisted of cost accounting, or trying to save money for the company. Richard was also very good at getting the most for his own money; his work at Ford translated into the home in a good way.

It was not unusual for Richard to encounter "old" Henry Ford while working at the COB (Central Office Building at FoMoCo). One of his fraternity brothers was Mr. Ford's secretary, so Richard occasionally had lunch with Mr. Ford and his Arm of Honor fraternity friend.

Jim inherited many of his Dad's characteristics, including his love of travel. Jim, who is constantly searching through travel websites, marvels at how organized his Dad was when he sent for tourist information months before their vacations. Richard would pore over maps and brochures for hours. Nothing was at his fingertips unless he had sent for it.

Richard jumped at the chance to retire 5 years early from Ford; in retrospect, it was a very good decision since it gave Richard and Margaret 5 good years of travel, including lots of international travel. Just about the time Richard was originally scheduled to retire, Margaret's diabetes started to get the best of her and travel would have been difficult.

Margaret and Richard knew how to have fun. There were card parties in the neighborhood and parties at the Elks Club. Richard experienced some hard times after Margaret, the love of his life, died in 1982.

Richard S. Palm died September 14, 1997, in Palm Beach Gardens, Palm Beach Co., Florida. Margaret D. Palm died May 7, 1982, also in Palm Beach County.

Sara was Jim's aunt, the younger sister of Margaret (White) Palm. Sara married Verne Woodworth and lived in the Detroit, Michigan, area for several years. She moved to Missouri with her adult daughters (living). Her son, Jack Woodworth, remained in the Detroit area. Jim did not see the girls very often, but saw Jack occasionally at the local lumber yard where he (Jack) worked. I was fortunate enough to meet Jack and his wife -- not in Michigan, but at an impromptu White grandchildren family reunion in Sarasota, Florida. Shortly after that get-together, Jack died (January 2006).

Sara's oldest daughter's address in Missouri was found in Richard Palm's address book after his (Richard's) death in 1997. I had briefly corresponded with her, basically to let her know that her uncle (Richard Palm) had died (Margaret (White) Palm had died in 1982).

I've recently found some information on the Woodworth side of the family for a future post.

Cousin Fred's Sias & Whitney Ancestors

Cousin Fred, who died July 16, 2008, was the son of Helen White and Fred Whitney Sias. He was a small child when his father died (see obit below) and his brother was not yet born. His widowed mother, Helen (White) Sias, went to live with her parents (Fernando James & Cinderella Amelia (McFadyen) White), so Fred spent some of his formative years with his maternal grandparents. His mother married 2nd, Cleo Krantz, whose first wife was Thelma Sias, Cousin Fred's paternal aunt. Fred and his brother adopted the Krantz surname as a tribute to the man who raised them.
