Murder Of John C. Depew 

A brutal murder occurred near Chelsea in September, 1863, John C. Depew being killed by some unknown person. Henry B. Cleveland was arrested, and in December following was tried and sentenced to the State's prison for life. He served but two or three years, when he was pardoned by the Governor, there being grave doubts of his guilt. (An account of the murder will be found in

As seen in the Los Angeles Herald, Volume XXXI, Number 80, 19 December 1903:

HEIRESS TO FORTUNE BELIEVED SHE WAS POOR 

Strange Legacy Mystery for Probate Court to Unravel

CHICAGO. Dec. 18.—Left an heiress in her infancy and only discovering the fact when she was 27 years old and married, is the experience related to Probate Judge Cutting by Mrs. Clara Lang Malcolm. In proceedings begun to ascertain what had become of an estate valued at $135,000 alleged to have been dissipated by her father and guardian, C. W. Lang, once a real estate dealer In Chicago. The court ordered a box In a safety deposit vault opened in the hope that some remnant of the property may be discovered. Mrs. Malcolm told the court that her mother [Clara Irene Day] died in 1876. Immediately afterward the little girl was sent to her father's parents in Lapeer, Mich. Occasionally, she said, her father sent her money, the largest single sum being $30, but she never knew she was an heiress until she was married last June and went to reside in Ann Arbor. Judge Cutting ordered a citation issued for the plaintiff's father to compel his appearance in court.

Note:  According to the 19th March 1905 issue of the Chicago Tribune, Dr. V. C. Price, Surety, will pay $100,000.00 to satisfy a $165,000.00 judgement against Cuthbert W. Laing in favor of his daughter. [Source - Fold3]

"On June 8...general orders were received to fall back in the direction of Corinth...taking up our quarters about four miles south of that place in a large piece of woods, which was termed 'Camp Big Springs,' taking its name from a monster spring of ice-cold water which gurgled from the hillside in that vicinity. Aside from this one lone spring, however, water was exceedingly scarce and very difficult to obtain." [Source]

"This is the first detailed map of part of Michigan Territory. By 1825 federal land surveyors had surveyed much of southeast Michigan. Two map makers woke up to the fact that the Erie Canal was going to bring many settlers to Michigan and these settlers would need information about the surveyed parts of the Territory. Competing maps were made by Orange Risdon and John Farmer, of which Risdon’s is the older and was drawn at a much larger scale."

Family trouble and a parental kidnapping by Guy Chase Van Alstyne?  The son, D'arcy Van Alstyne, was found unharmed.  The Guy Chase Van Alstyne involved in the kidnapping case lived in Brooklyn, NY, at the time (ca 1906).

In Order to be Owner of Half a Million

According to the terms of his uncle's will, C.E. Babcock [sic] of Ann Arbor, Michigan, would inherit $500,000.00 if he married within 5 years, as reported in the Fort Worth Daily Gazette on February 20, 1889.   His uncle died "last June"... .

However, the Macon Telegraph, published January 23, 1889, had a different set of facts for the same story.
Instead of C.E. Babcock, the name was James L. Babcock; he was 45 years old and lived with his mother.  His uncle, Luther James, never married.

"A Romantic Story" published in the Dallas Morning News on September 6, 1888, added that the uncle, Luther James, had lived in Lima, Washtenaw County, Michigan.  Apparently Mr. James put the kabosh on an earlier marriage planned by his nephew, James L. Babcock and later regretted is interference.

The Trenton Evening Times (25 November 1892) stated that he married Miss Ella Stanley Butler.  The Grand Forks Herald indicated that he married Miss Butler in Waukesha, WI, on September 28, 1892.

L. James Babcock of Ann Arbor, Michigan, "capitalist," age 60, had been married to Ella for 8 years in 1900.

The Ann Arbor News, published 31 January 1912, stated that James L. Babcock died in St. Petersburg, Florida.  He was to be buried in Ann Arbor.  The paper also added that James was the son of Dr. Leland and Elizabeth (James) Babcock, born in Goshen, Massachusetts, February 10, 1840.  He is a descendant of the Pilgrim fathers through his mother, who was the daughter of Malachi and Elizabeth (Lyman) James.

The Reverend Leander Smith Hobart (widower of Jane Goodrich Hobart) wrote a genealogy book entitled, "William Hobart, his Ancestors and Descendants."  Note:  His immigrant ancestor, Edmund Hobart, is one of my possible ancestors, too.  It is thought that Rebecca Hobart, Edmund's daughter, married Edward Bangs as his second wife and had Hannah.  Hannah married John Doane; their daughter, Rebecca Doane, married Elisha Paine (my lineage from the Paines here).

George & Alvina Millar were buried in Washtenong Cemetery. The cemetery is in Washtenaw County, Michigan, where they resided (Ann Arbor) after moving from their Upper Peninsula home in Torch Lake Township.

Kirchhofers of Michigan & California and Kin

Initially, when encountering the "Kirchhofer" name, I wondered if they were related to my first cousin (4 times removed), Clara Howard Kirchhoffer, wife of John Nesbitt Kirchhoffer (who hosted the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, later King George V and Queen Mary). At this time there is no known connection, but there is a Lapeer County, Michigan, connection which is just as good!

The Manchester (MI) Enterprise published this news item 2 August 1917:

27 August 1908 Hugo Kirchhofer, of Manchester, Michigan, married Clara Tuttle in Lapeer County, Michigan. The marriage record listed his occupation as "vocal teacher" and hers as "music teacher."

The Flint Journal newspaper published the item below on 2 February 1916:

Mrs. Hugo Kirchhofer, nee Clara Tuttle, and two children, Dorothy and Margaret Marie of Hollywood, California, will spend the summmer with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Charles Tuttle. Mr. Kirchhofer will go to Buffalo for a musical convention as soon as school is out and then come to Lapeer for the remainder of the summer.

Note: I found this article while researching at the Lapeer County Genealogical Research Center; the index to selected Flint Journal article extracts are in the front of the notebook (in this case, the year 1916) and a copy of each indexed article is also in the notebook.

Did Hugo Kirchhofer coin the name "Hollywood Bowl"? Apparently he did according to this article:

...Hugo Kirchhofer conducting the Community Sing. When Kirchhofer saw the site, he commented, It looks just like a bowl! The name stuck.

Hugo Kirchhofer died 18 June 1955 in Los Angeles, California.
