The Bradley Yarn Manufacturers

Source - 1850 Ohio County, Virginia

In 1850 William Bradley, age 37, who was born in Yorkshire, England, was a yarn manufacturer doing business as The Bradley Woolen Factory in Ohio County, Virginia [later West Virginia].  His wife, Elizabeth, age 32, who was born in Pennsylvania, as well as children Thomas Leander, Mary, Martha, Samuel, and Albert S. were living with him.  Next door was Samuel Bradley, a yarn manufacturer also born in England, with his wife, Catherine [Anderson], and their children.


The Bradley Woolen Factory was described in a Beyond Hill and Hollow: Original Readings in Appalachian Women's Studies excerpt:

By 1860, William Bradley was dead and Elizabeth [Anderson] Bradley was the manufacturer.  The family was living in the 4th Ward of Wheeling, Ohio County,Virginia.  Wm A. [Willie Ann] was two years old, born the July following her father's death in January 1858.

Note: Katherine (McFadyen) Duckworth was the sister of Jim's ancestor, James C. McFadyen.

I, Katherine C. Duckworth of Brookside Farms, Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, being of sound mind, memory, and understanding, do make, publish, and declare the following to be my last will and testament.

After the payment of all my just debts and funeral expenses, I give and bequeath to my niece, Mrs. Margaret Addleman, residing at the above mentioned Brookside Farms, all the rest and residue of my savings and checking account, --number One thousand, one hundred (#1113) and thirteen,--deposited in the Yough Trust Company, Connellsville, Pennsylvania.

I give and bequeath to Mrs. Dorcas Norton, widow of Mr. Lester Norton, residing at Number 215 Carnegie Avenue, Connellsville, Pennsylvania, the sum of One Hundred ($100.00) Dollars in cash, but in case she dies before me, said bequest is to lapse, and said sum of money is hereby bequeathed to the above mentioned Mrs. Margaret Addleman.

I give and bequeath to the Christian Womens Board of Missions, of the Christian Church of Connellsville, Pennsylvania, of which I am a life-member, the sum of Fifty ($50.00) Dollars, to be expended as such Board sees fit; and I herein give the bequeath to the Martha Norton Bible Class, of the same Church, of which I am an organized--member, the sum of Fifty ($50.00) Dollars.

I give and bequeath to the Yough Trust Company a corporation organized under the laws of the State of Pennsylvania, and doing in business in Connellsville, of said State, the sum of One Hundred ($100.00) Dollars in cash, to be held in trust, the interest therefrom at six (6%) per-cent,---less the business charge of five (5%) per-cent of said Trust Company on the annual dividend,---is to be paid to the Chestnut Hill Cemetary [sic], incorporated in the Common Pleas Court of Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and doing business in said City of Connellsville, of which the Officers are now, Charles H. Whitely, President and Charles E. DeMuth, Secretary and Treasurer, to be appropriated and expended on the care and up-keep of the family plot in said Chestnut Hill Cemetary [sic].

All the rest and residue of my property, both real, personal, and mixed, of which I may be in possession and seized of at the time of my death, I hereby bequeath and devise to my above mentioned niece, Mrs. Margaret Addleman.  Lastly, I do hereby appoint the above mentioned, Mrs. Margaret Addleman, and Mr. Charles Addleman, her husband, residing at the aforesaid Brookside Farms, Executors, each without Bonds, of this my last will and testament.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this Twenty Third day of September A. D. Nineteen Hundred and Twenty.

Family Trouble For The Kellys In Pittsburgh

An Orphans' Court, the case of Edward Kelly, Sr., plaintiff, was found in the Pittsburgh legal journal, Volume 32:


...at the time of the transfer of the 21st of March, 1874, there was a verbal agreement between the parties by which the the defendant undertook to provide for the wants of the plaintiff during his life, including the use and occupancy of the house on Ross street, and also to convey, after the plaintiff's death, a portion of the real estate to certain persons then and there agreed upon.

The defendant seems to have been wholly obedient to the will of his uncle.

In fact, between these parties there was no jar or discord until after the plaintiff's second marriage...and thus a dispute arose which led to the compromise of May 7, 1878.  Here, it might well be supposed, all possible controversy had an end.

But it may be pertinently asked, What had the defendant to do with all this [bad advice from the plaintiff's advisors to compromise]?  [Bottom line -- nothing]

Bridget Kelly's appeal is dismissed at costs of appellant. [In 1885, Bridget Kelley, widow of Edwd, was living at 105 Ross in Pittsburgh, PA]

James White, A Saddler, Born in Virginia

James White was born on November 28, 1828, in Wellsburg, Virginia, now West Virginia.  He was probably the same James White who died February 18, 1909, in Grove City, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and was the son of John White. 

I believe that the James White enumerated below is my husband's great-great grandfather, because his occupation is "saddler" and he is living in the presumed county of his birth (Brooke).

The 1860 and 1870 censuses below are definitely the census returns of Jim's great-great grandfather, because Jim's grandfather, Fernando, is enumerated with him and Fernando is an unusual name for the Ohio/Pennsylvania area.  James White was born in Virginia (now West Virginia), which is consistent with the James White found in the census below.

In 1860 James White was a "saddler" as he was in the 1850 census above.  In 1870 James White was a "harness maker" and in 1880 he was listed as a saddler again.

Sarah White died March 4, 1897, in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania.  There was a James White, born "June 1830" in Virginia, a widower with no occupation, living with Renwick and Cora (White) Denholm in 1900 in Pittsburgh as a boarder; I believe it is the same James White who is featured on this blog.

Obituary Of (Amelia) Cinderella (Jones) Moran

From the Cumberland [Maryland] Times, published 25 April 1941:

Mrs. Cinderella Moran
Lonaconing, Md.,  April 25--Mrs. Cinderella Moran, 83, a former resident, died yesterday at her home in Wilkinsburg, Pa., where she had resided for 34 years.  She was the widow of John Moran and formerly lived on Watercliffe here. 

She is survived by a son, John, at home, and two daughters, Mrs. Andrew Conley and Mrs. Ted Walsh, Wilkinsburg and a son, William Moran of California.  She leaves a sister, Mrs. Margaret Rowan of Lonaconing, who was with her when she died.  William Porter this place is a nephew.
