James Patillo's Naturalization Papers

A fellow Patillo researcher sent a copy of the James Pittullo [Patillo, Pattillo] Naturalization filed in Pope County, Illinois, to me. [Pope County Courthouse, Golconda, Illinois, Box 1803-1865  N-003 (N-001 may be related)].

22 December 1820
James Pittullo...who is desirous to be naturalized, did report himself to the clerk of the Circuit Court of Pope County and State aforesaid in the manner following...

• James Pittullo was born in Ely [Elie] Fifeshire, Scotland, in 1768
• He is now about fifty-two years of age
• He was born a member of the British Nation and owed allegiance to the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland
• He migrated from Belfast
• Arrived at the Port Of New Orleans on or about the 3 December 1819
• It is his intention to settle in the County of Pope aforesaid [Illinois]

30 December 1820
Sons of James Pittullo registered in the clerk's office of Pope County

• James Pittullo, Jr., aged eighteen years
• John Pittullo, aged seven years
• Nathaniel Pittullo, aged six years

All born at Ely, Fifeshire, Scotland

April Term of the Pope Circuit Court - 16 April 1821
James Pittullo appeared in court and declared upon Oath that it is bona fide his intention to become a citizen of the United States

How does my John Patillo fit in with this family?  Is he the son of James Pittullo, Senior, as originally thought?  John Patillo's son was Felix Grundy Patillo and Felix was the father of Nancy J. (Patillo) Rice.  John Patillo was also Alexander Sullenger's step-father.

There were many, many Pope County, Illinois, names found in the Robinson estate file, including that of James Patillo (Sr).

The will of Eleazer Givens, of Hopkins Co., KY, was dated 25 Aug. 1833, witnessed by James Rankin, H.O. Thompson, Newton D. Clark, and John Pittullo, and it was proved in the court of Judge James Rankin in Pope Co., IL, on 7 Oct. 1833, because all four witnesses were residents of Pope Co., IL.

Givens was shot and killed while in pursuit of a runaway slave in Smithland, KY, which is on the Ohio River just across the border from Pope Co., IL, and the will was apparently dictated on his deathbed to the witnesses, who were from Illinois.

Patillo the sum of $20.12 1/2 Debt, with Interest to be computed after the rate of six per centum perannum from 10 Oct 1815 until paid as also his costs in this behalf expended and the Defendant in mercy &c.

James Pittullo, Senior married Mahala Cottan on 27 September 1821, as his 3rd wife, in Pope Co., Illinois. James Patillo, Sr. (ca 1768 - ca 1844), my 5th great-grandfather, moved to Grant Co., Wisconsin with other members of his family, although my branch remained in Illinois (Me, Living, Katherine Johnson, Katie Rice, Nancy Jane Patillo, Felix G. Patillo, John S. Patillo, James Patillo, Sr.) until Katherine Johnson moved to Arkansas, then to Michigan and finally to Texas (her mother, Katie Rice, may have moved to Arkanas before dying in childbirth).

The gravestone of James Patillo, Sr. was "unearthed" from a "vanished graveyard" per a 1931 newspaper article in the Fennimore Times, linked to the Wisconsin Historical Society website (I have it linked here on a previous blog).
