John McFadyen And His Heritage

Source [See vol...Dec_1_1905_to_May_15_1906.pdf]

The biography of John McFadyen, son of Michael and Margaret (Craig) McFadyen, provided information about the family.  One important clue stated that John was born in Kilburnie, Ayrshire, Scotland (in 1849).  John's widowed mother came to Maryland with five children when he was about 7 years old.  After the Civil War the move was made to Pennsylvania where Margaret McFadyen died at the age of 65.

John attended Johns Hopkins and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree and spent his life in the coal industry, perhaps influenced by the legacy of his father, who was a mining engineer.

John's 1910 death in New Jersey was noted in his biography.  It was noted that two of his siblings, James, of Wilkinsburg, and Kate Duckworth, of Connellsville, survived him.

Here's a blog of another person who is researching McFadyens from Kilburnie.

David Welsh And His Brewery

From the Centennial History of the Borough of Connellsville, Pennsylvania, 1806-1906:

Christian Snyder and David Welsh erected a brewery about 1870 on Mountain alley at the northeast corner of Apple street. It was a three story building, the first story being built of hammer-dressed stone and the second and third stories frame. The first story is still standing, having been incorporated into the tenement house which occupied the site of the old brewery until purchased and converted into the distilling house of the Connellsville Distilling Company.

The Whites And Some Affiliated Families

The Whites in Jim's family tree:

Margaret Dell White, daughter of
Fernando John White, son of
James White, son of

I've estimated (guess-timated) that John White was born about 1800 in Scotland; it's unknown to whom he was married.

James White, son of John, was born in Virginia (now West Virginia) and married Sarah Jones in Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio.

Fernando John White married Sophia Albert.  More about the Albert relatives here.  Their primary home was Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

Fernando James White married Amelia Cinderella McFadyen.  More about the McFadyens here and here.  After living in Pittsburgh for many years, they moved to Columbiana County, Ohio, then made another move to Detroit, Michigan, where they lived until they retired to Orlando, Florida.

Obituary Of Eliza Ann (Porter) McFadyen

From the Reveille Echo [Ohio], published August 11, 1921:

Three days following the celebration of her seventy-first birthday anniversary, Mrs. Eliza Ann McFadyen answered the death summons Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F. J. The McFadyen Immigrants

Are they Jim's McFadyens?  I believe so.  Margaret McFadyen (McFadden in the record) is listed as a "spinster" (it is believed she was a widow when she immigrated from Scotland to the United States).  The time frame is correct and the children match the known children of Margaret McFadyen almost perfectly.  There is an additional Margaret (age 23) that was unknown to me; she is an anomaly in the record.  James, age 5, was Jim's ancestor.
