In the name of God Amen” I William D. Jones,” of Charleston near Lonaconing Allegany County,” in the State of Maryland,” Being sick and weak in body,” And of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof” And being desirous to settle my worldly affairs; and thereby be the better prepared to leave this world when it shall please God to call me hence,” do therefore make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say…………………
First and principally I commit my soul into the hands of Almighty God and my body to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my executor hereinafter named, “ after my debts and funeral charges are paid; I devise and bequeath as follows I give and devise and bequeath unto my dear wife Margaret all my real estate and personal property of every kind and description which I own or possessed at the time of my death wheresoever located; during her natural life And from and after her death I give devise and bequeath unto my children as follows “to wit” Joseph Porter, John T. Porter, Henry Porter, Eliza McFadyen wife of James - Ruth Hyde, Sarah Frye - Cinderella Moran; Margaret E. Rowan, William D. Jones Junior, James L. Jones, Edward W. Jones and Hattie Dawson to be divided, share and share alike between all the above named children and step children without preference to none; of them and lastly, I do hereby constitute and appoint Joseph Porter to be my sole executor of this my last will and testament revoking and annulling all former Wills by me heretofore made ratifying and confirming this and none other to be my last Will and Testament;

Susan Wheeler's Will

Sarah Jones, who married James White in 1852 in Jefferson County, Ohio, was probably the daughter of William Jones (born ca 1800 in Pennsylvania) and Susan Styer (Stier/Steer, born ca 1800 in Maryland).  Sarah (Jones) White's Pennsylvania death record listed her parents as William Jones and Susan Jones.  There was a marriage record in Jefferson County, Ohio, for a William Jones and a Susan Styres in an appropriate time frame (8 January 1824).

In 1850 there was a Sarah Jones living in a household in Jefferson County with a Susan Wheeler, of the same age and birthplace as Sarah's mother.  Could Susan Wheeler be the mother of Sarah (Jones) White? Possibly.

I've estimated (guess-timated) that John White was born about 1800 in Scotland; it's unknown to whom he was married.

James White, son of John, was born in Virginia (now West Virginia) and married Sarah Jones in Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio.

Fernando John White married Sophia Albert.  More about the Albert relatives here.  Their primary home was Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

Fernando James White married Amelia Cinderella McFadyen.  More about the McFadyens here and here.  After living in Pittsburgh for many years, they moved to Columbiana County, Ohio, then made another move to Detroit, Michigan, where they lived until they retired to Orlando, Florida.

In the name of the benevolent father of all, I William Jones of the County of Jefferson and State of Ohio, do make and publish this my last Will and Testament.

First I give and devise to my beloved wife all my Estate real and personal during her natural life: the personal property to be disposed of by her as she may see proper, excepting the following (To Wit) One bed and bedding, One bureau One Side saddle & one cow which I will and bequeath to my Daughter Sarah Jones and one bed and bedding one bureau One Side Saddle and One Cow, which I will and bequeath to my grand Daughter Mary Dash. and at the Death of my beloved wife, I will that my real estate be sold, and that the proceeds arising from the sale thereof be divided amongst my following names heirs (to wit) Hanah Schlidt, Nancy Penic(k)** Rebekah Bell, Ruth Ritaley*, Sarah Jones, Mary Dash and James Penic(k), the proceeds as above to be equally divided amongst

Be it remembered that at a Court of Common Pleas, begun and held at the Court House in Steubenville, within and for Said County of Jefferson, on Monday the 4th day of September A. D. 1848 among other proceedings then ad there had, at Said Court was the following to wit:

In the Matter of the last Will and
Testament of William Jones, Dec'd

This day a paper writing purporting to be the last Will and Testament of William Jones, late of the County of Jefferson was brought into Court, and Alexander Sutherland and John A. Dehuff, the two subscribing witnesses to said paper writing, being first duly sworn, and the said paper writing being exhibited to them they each did depose and Say "I saw the said William Jones deceased, sign said paper writing and as for his Last Will and Testament, I signed the same as a witness in his presence and at his request. He the said William Jones deceased, at the time of the signing thereof was of sound mind and memory of the full age of twenty one years, and was under no restraint" And the Court being satisfied that said paper writing had been duly executed published and declared by the said William Jones in his lifetime as and for his last Will and Testament, the same is admitted to probate and together with the foregoing evidence ordered to be, recorded. Thereupon, Sarah Jones the Executrix named in said

last Will and Testament, came into Court and declined taking upon herself the execution thereof. And Sarah Jones, widow of said Testator appeared in open Court and Elected to take under the Will. Also came Mark Bell, the Executor in said Will named and took upon himself the execution of said last Will and Testament. Bond ordered to be given in the Sum of Six thousand dollars ($6000.). Henry Taggart and John Dehuff was approved of as securities, and George Alban, James Scott, and John Depuy were appointed appraisers of the personal property of said Estate. Ordered that letters Testamentary issue accordingly.

Jim's ancestor is William Jones, whose daughter, Sarah, married James White on 25 April 1852 in Jefferson Co., Ohio. However, our Sarah's mother's was named as Susan Styer and in the Will Sarah Jones was named as William's widow.

It also appears as though Sarah Jones, the daughter, was in the 1880 census with her sister, Hannah Schlidt and therefore wouldn't be our Sarah (Jones) White:

Piecing Together A Family From A Newspaper Announcement In Cheboygan, Michigan

While researching the WHITNEY surname in northern Michigan, I found the following entry in a fairly comprehensive Cheboygan Co., Michigan, Index at the GenWeb site:

On a trip to the Library of Michigan in Lansing, MI, I used the date from the indexed item above and found the following article relating to "Miss" Margaret Whitney.


Once I found the Cheboygan newspaper article, Margaret appeared to be unrelated to any Whitney I was researching, but thought that a move to West Virginia from northern Michigan was interesting. I shelved the article several months ago and while searching through my files today, thought that with the Michigan marriages and West Virginia records online here, I might have a little luck finding "the rest of the story" behind Margaret Whitney.

Since Margaret Whitney married Wilbur Jones, his name was checked first and found this record (the categories left blank were erased):
