Scroggins, Rices, And Tarrants

Harold Rice research sent (eventually) to me...:

"I think the Scroggins, Rices, Tarrants and Ransoms moved together from Virginia to Rutherford County, North Carolina, to Greenville and Pendleton District South Carolina to Green, Franklin and Juniper Counties, Georgia, then spread out to Franklin County, Tennesse, and to Gallatin County, Illinois.  I think the Mt. Airy people could have been ours.  Mt. Airy is in Sequatchie County, Tennessee, some of which had been Marion County, which is next to Franklin County, Tennessee.

I found an Ephraim Reese in 1790 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, and there is an Ephraim Rice in Marion County, Tennessee, in 1840, in the Pendleton Distict of South Carolina.  On its list is Tarrants.

The 1790 census of South Carolina 96th District, Greenville County lists Humphrey Scroggins, David Reese, Benjamin Tarrant and John Rice.

The 1782 Henry County, Virginia, Military records lists the following in S. Tarrant Company:  Humphrey Scroggins, Thomas Scroggins, John Farris and Joseph Rice.  Oglethorpe Company, Georgia, 1794-1800: Phillip Scroggins, Thomas Rice, Humphrey Scroggins.

Helen Davis Not Helen David Married George Beach

The book, Families of Early Milford, Connecticut, stated that George Landa Beach married Helen David.

The woman identified as Helen David was actually Helen Davis and was part of the family featured in the History of the Town of Rockingham, Vermont:...:

Nathaniel Davis (b. 1715) had a son Nathaniel who was the father of James Davis.  A daughter of James Davis and Amanda Grimes was Helen A. Davis, b. Nov. 1, 1843, m. July 1, 1872, George [Landa] Beach and had children Samuel and Charlie.

Helen's sister, Mary Jane Davis, married Arthur Lemuel Rice.  The Rices were the ancestors of my double cousin, Connie Brinley Butterfield.  Connie's Davis lineage extended to Walter Powers/Trial Shepard.

James Dudley Johnson

J.D. Johnson
(My apologies to whomever sent this to me; I've lost track of  the source)

Ahnentafel #14

Grandma Katie's father, James Dudley Johnson was born July 14, 1862, in Harrisburg, Illinois.  He died in Trumann, Poinsett, Arkansas, on August 9, 1932.

State Census: 1865
James (Sr.) is enumerated by name. There are 2 boys and 1 girl ages 10 and under and 1 male and 1 female between the ages of 20 and 30.  James Dudley Johnson would have been one of the boys under the age of 10.

The first Federal census in which James appears.  He is enumerated with his parents, James and Nancy A., siblings George W., Elvira E., Josephine and William L. They are in Township 9, Range 7, Saline County, Illinois.

Census: 1880
James was living in Saline County, Illinois, with his parents, James and Nancy Johnson, as well as siblings George W., Elvira E., Josephine, William L., and Jacob G. Johnson.

James Dudley Johnson and Katie Rice were married September 28, 1887.

Census: 1900
James D. Johnson was living with his wife, Kate E., and children Pearl, James E., Mable, Evert, and Blanch, in Cottage Grove Township, Saline County, Illinois.

Census: 1910
James was a widower living with his children Mable, Evert, Blanch, George, Marie and Katie in Harrisburg, Illinois.  Two year old Charles was living with them and enumerated as a son; however, I believe he may have been Charles Mason, son of Pearl (Johnson) Mason Logan.  Baby daughter Ruth was not living with James and the other children.

Information from Katie Rice's niece:

"Kate had married James Johnson and the family called him Keith or Keet. Kate died after childbirth with Ruth. Mom (Ruby)...said they lived about 3 miles from them down the railroad tracks. They older boys, Evert and Jim, stayed at mom's a lot after Kate died. The older girls, who were in their teens, tried to keep the home together but couldn't cope with a newborn and Katie who was not three yet."

Census: 1920
Living with James was his daughter Marie, age 16; they were enumerated as Johnston, rather than Johnson. He was widowed and living in Poinsett County, Arkansas.

Census: 1930
James D. Johnson was living with his son Everett and Everett's family in Poinsett County, Arkansas. [Listed as "Divorced"]

James Dudley Johnson's 1932 Death record.

Grandma Katie's Ancestors And DNA

Based upon DNA submitted by my brother at Family Tree DNA and a fortunate match with Grandma Katie's nephew's daughter (through Pearl Johnson, Grandma Katie's sister, and Robert Logan, Pearl's son), I was able to select persons who matched both my brother and Pearl's granddaughter, and make the assumption that those persons had a mutual ancestor(s) somewhere in Grandma Katie's family tree (as opposed to the Powers (paternal) tree or the Garrett (my maternal grandfather's) family tree).

The 73rd Illinois At Chickamauga

The National Park Service at Chickamauga Battlefield provided the movements of Captain James A. Rice's 73rd IL (who was captured September 20th) during the Battle of Chickamauga:

LAIBOLDT'S BRIGADE
SHERIDAN'S DIVISION - MCCOOK'S CORPS
Col. Bernard Laiboldt
September 19, 1863, 5:00 P.M. 1st Position

44th ILLINOIS - Col. Wallace W. Barrett
73rd ILLLINOIS - Col. James F. Jaquess
2nd MISSOURI - Maj. Arnold Beck
15th MISSOURI - Col. Joseph Conrad

BATTERY G, 1ST MISSOURI LIGHT ARTILLERY - Lieut. Gustavus Schueler

Laiboldt's Brigade followed Bradley's from Lee and Gordon's Mills, and formed line on this ground about 5:00 as a support to Bradley. The latter Brigade, after severe fighting, repulsed the enemy, and Laiboldt's troops were not brought into action. The brigade bivouacked on this ground until near daybreak when it was withdrawn with the rest of its division to the high ground next west of Widow Glenn's.

73rd ILLLINOIS - Col. James F. Jaquess
2nd MISSOURI - Maj. Arnold Beck
15th MISSOURI - Col. Joseph Conrad
BATTERY G, 1ST MISSOURI LIGHT ARTILLERY - Lieut. Gustavus Schueler

Before daylight of Sept. 20th this brigade was brought from its bivouac at Viniard's to this position where it held the right of Sheridan's Division with Lytle's Brigade on its left, Bradley's (Walworth's) being in reserve. At 11 o'clock the latter brigade relieved Laiboldt's which was sent to the left under instructions to occupy ground which had been held by Gen. Negley. Upon reaching the Dyer Fields it took position on the ridge west of the Tan Yard, Carlin's Brigade of Davis' Division having reached the ground which Laiboldt was ordered to cover.

73rd ILLLINOIS - Col. James F. Jaquess
2nd MISSOURI - Maj. Arnold Beck
15th MISSOURI - Col. Joseph Conrad
BATTERY G, 1ST MISSOURI LIGHT ARTILLERY - Lieut. Gustavus Schueler

About 11 A. M. the brigade formed on the ridge west of this position in column of regiments. When Davis' line on the Brotherton place was attacked,  Laiboldt's Brigade was ordered to charge and pressed forward to the ground in front of this line, while part of the ridge it first held was occupied by Lytle's Brigade of Sheridan's Division. Carlin's Brigade was forced back over Laiboldt's and both over Lytle's, and all back nearly to Crawfish Springs Road. The line then rallied, regained the ridge, and forced the enemy toward the foot of it. The Union line was again driven back over the high ground west of the Crawfish Springs Road and off the field. Casualties Sept. 19th and 20th: Killed, 38; Wounded, 243; Missing, 108; Total, 389.

2nd MISSOURI - Maj. Arnold Beck
15th MISSOURI - Col. Joseph Conrad
BATTERY G, 1ST MISSOURI LIGHT ARTILLERY - Lieut. Gustavus Schueler

At 11 A. M. Sept. 20, this brigade held the right of Sheridan's Division. Its position was just south of Widow Glenn's. When Longstreet's troops broke through the Union center at the Brotherton House, Sheridan's Division was moved rapidly to the left to support Davis' Division in an assault to restore the line. Liaboldt's Brigade, accompanied by Battery C, 1st Illinois, Capt. M. H. Prescott, of Walworth's Brigade, came into position on the slope, the battery to the left and rear of the infantry which was formed on the slope in column of regiments. Davis' Division was then being forced to the rear in confusion by an attack on its front and left; Laiboldt's Brigade charged down the slope and into the edge of the woods in its front, when it, in turn, being forced back retreated hastily to the hills west of this position whence it continued to McFarland's Gap. Prescott's Battery fired only 8 or 10 rounds from this position, being prevented by retreating men in its front. In retreating it lost three guns, the horses being shot down. Casualties: Killed, 38; Wounded, 243; Missing, 108; Total, 389.

Illinois Pioneer William Roark

From the Illinois Archives:  The "Illinois State Genealogical Society" has a "Prairie Pioneer Certificate" on file for William Roark; the Pioneer Ancestor Application was completed by (Descendant) Karen Elder.  The salient points from William Roark's file:

William Roark settled in Gallatin County, Illinois circa 1810

William Roark and his son Michael Roark [both ancestors of mine, too] purchased land together from the Shawneetown Land Distribution as early as 1810

William made a sworn affidavit while living in Michael's home

In the 1840 United States Census, Gallatin County, Illinois, William Roark is enumerated as a 78 year old military pensioner living with Michael Roark

Elizabeth [Eleanor] Roark [also my ancestor], Michael Roark's daughter, married Felix G. Patillo (Saline County, Illinois, records) Saline County, Illinois records name Elizabeth as Felix Patillo's widow, and William Roark as Elizabeth's brother

Elizabeth (Roark) Patillo's daughter, Nancy Jane Patillo, married James A. Rice

Research Using Old Envelopes And Postcards

Mr. Miller sent a nice e-mail to me after finding the Saulpaw surname on my Rootsweb database. It basically stated that he "...recently found a photo of an old envelope that Maxwell, Saulpaw & Company of Nashville, Tennessee sent in 1861."  He wasn't related, but had "a photo of the envelope because of an interest in using old envelopes and postcards in genealogical research."  His e-mail led me to the very interesting Philatelic Genealogy website where the envelope could be viewed.
Mr. Miller explained how to find the specific envelope referenced in his e-mail:
To see the envelope -- (from the Main Menu, select Search Database, enter Saulpaw, press Enter on your keyboard, and click on Moses).

This photograph is copyright Schuyler Rumsey Philatelic Auctions (http://www.rumseyauctions.com/) and appears in the auction catalog for Sale 37, Lot 1636, as well as on Philgen.org (http://philgen.org; search on Saulpaw). Reprinting, distributing, or copying this photograph in any form requires written consent from Schuyler Rumsey Philatelic Auctions.

Back to the Saulpaws:  Emeline Davis married George Saulpaw.  Emeline's sister, Mary Jane Davis, married Arthur Lemuel Rice (brother of my ancestor, James A. Rice).  Mary Jane and Arthur were the ancestors of my double cousin (and the late, great researcher, Connie Brinley Butterfield).  And that's why the Saulpaws were in my Rootsweb database.

Rice Cemetery

Guess where some of my Rices are buried -- Rice Cemetery in Cottage Township, Saline County, Illinois!

Captain James A. Rice is found at FindAGrave as being buried in Rice Cemetery.  His grave is there; we visited this cemetery several years ago. [Note:  His mother is listed as Elizabeth Lee on the record; I believe his mother was Ann (Hinds) Rice, daughter of William Hinds and Elizabeth Acklin].

Rice Cemetery, NE 1/4 NW 1/4, Section 7, T 9 S R 7 E.  Take US Route 45 North from Harrisburg.  Turn east on gravel road just north of the first bridge and before reaching Muddy Road go east about 1 3/4 miles. The cemetery is located on the north side of the road on the side of a fairly large hill and covers about two acres.

Who Was David Rice?

Was David Rice related to my ancestor, Ransom Scroggins Rice?  Land in Franklin County, Tennessee, was transferred to Ransom Rice by David Rice in open Court May term 1820.  That suggested a relationship.

This message mentions a Jackson County, Georgia, 1799 Tax List and Benjamin Rice, David Rice and Chatham (Chattin Doggett) Scroggin.  Ransom Scroggins Rice was said to have been born in Georgia.  Was it Jackson County, Georgia?

A GenForum message stated that Benjamin Rice was Ransom Scroggins Rice's father.  If this tree (the William Pendley Rice and Mary Ann Gooch tree) is correct, Ransom S. Rice's uncle is David Rice.  Another version of the Rice/Gooch tree.

Now I have some names and a place (Jackson Co., GA) to work with.  Is David Rice Ransom S. Rice's uncle?  It's possible.
