Charles Eickhoff, Civil War Vet, Died In Flint, MI

Found the obituary of Civil War Veteran Charles Eickhoff in the Flint Journal. Mr. Eickhoff was born in Germany, lived in the Rochester, NY, area, and also Allegany Co., NY, before moving to Grayling,Michigan, and ultimately to Flint, where he died.

Obituary from the Flint Journal, September 1920

Results of a search of the 1860 census:

1860 NY Monroe, Rochester, 5-Ward
Eggington, Jane, 63, b. Ireland
Eichoff, Charles, 21, carpenter, b. Mecklenburg

1860 NY Wayne, Arcadia, P.O. Newark

Fritz (Frederick) Eickhoff, Charles' brother, is listed as "idiotic" on the 1860 census. Additional information indicates that Charles Eickhoff's son, Arlington Eickhoff, was a graduate of the Gallaudet University (a school for the deaf) and was a teacher at the Flint (MI) School for the Deaf (as was his wife, Anna (Lennon) Eickhoff; was Fritz deaf and not "idiotic"?

In 1870, Charles Eickhoff, Sr., (father of the Civil War veteran) was still living in Wayne Co., NY, with his wife Dora, and son Frederick, 22 "idiotic".

Frederick Eickhoff was living with his sister, Clara (Eickhoff) Nicols, in 1880.

The Grayling, Crawford Co., MI Newspaper Avalanche, transcribed and online here, was a wonderful source of information for the Eickhoff family. Included was the notation that the father of Charles Eickhoff, 87, had died in Woodland, NY (18 March 1897). Since my ancestors lived in an adjacent county (Roscommon), I will be perusing the Avalanche transcriptions again.

Fannie Eickhoff's mother, who was living with her in the 1900 & 1910 censuses, was in Lyons, Wayne Co., NY, in 1880:
