John Johnson was born in Georgia about 1793.  He married Mary Greer about 1814.

John and Mary lived in Tennessee when their daughter, Rebecca, was born in 1815.  They were still in Tennessee when their daughter, Mary (Laura Ann) Johnson was born in 1817.  Daughter Mariah (Between 1816 and 1820) was also born in Tennessee, as was son William (1825) and daughter, Elizabeth (about 1829).  Lucy was born in Illinois about 1832 as were Elijah (November 1834), Nancy J., James and Martin.

They were living in Gallatin County, Illinois, by 1839.

Probably this John Johnson living in Equality Township, Gallatin County, Illinois. There were 3 males under the age of 5 in the household.

John and Mary, in Eagle Township, Gallatin County, Illinois, as well as children Elijah, James, Nancy J., and Martin.  Mary's mother, Rebecca Greer, was also in the household.

Census: 1860

John (b. in Georgia) and Mary (b. in Virginia) were living in Saline County, Illinois (Township 9 Range 6 E).  Daughter Mariah Baker lived nearby as did son James.

State Census: 1865

There was one male (presumably John Johnson) aged 70 years and under 80 (no female of that age group in the household) in the Elijah Johnson household.

Census 1870

John was living in Saline County (Township 9 Range 6 E) with his son Elijah and Elijah's family.

He died after 1870.

John Johnson Was Born In Georgia

Georgia transplant Eli Whitney was granted a patent, the Yazoo land fraud was ongoing and John Johnson was born in Georgia in 1794. Native Americans tribes populated Georgia, whose boundaries stretched to the Mississipi River. Benjamin Hawkins was appointed as an agent among the Creeks in 1796 by President Washington. Hawkins described a farm that grew peaches, cotton, corn, rice, peas, beans, squashes, pumpkins, watermelons and colewarts.

In 1777 the first Georgia counties were formed [replacing parishes]. They were Burke, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Richmond and Wilkes Counties [along the coast]. In 1784 counties Franklin was formed from Cherokee lands and Washington from Creek lands. Bourbon County was formed in the Natchez area and eliminated shortly thereafter. Greene County was next, formed from Washington and Wilkes. Several more counties were created in 1793. [Source]

About 1814 John Johnson married Mary (Polly) Greer, who was born about 1793 in Virginia. The family moved to Tennessee before finally settling in southern Illinois.

Administrator's Sale.  Will be sold, agreeably to an order of the honorable the Inferior Court of Clark county, on the first Tuesday in May next, at the Court-house in Greene county, a tract of Land in said county, lying on the waters of Fishing creek, adjoining the Frederick Hudson and others, belonging to the estate of Asa Greer, late of Clark county, deceased.  Sold for the benefit of the heirs and creditors of said estate.  Terms twelve months credit, small notes with good security.  John James, Adm'r.

Same newspaper edition had another reference to the Asa Greer estate and notice in the same edition mentioned Asahel Greer.  John James was the administrator named in all three notices.

Mary Greer was born about 1793 in Virginia, to Asa Greer and Rebecca Neighbors.  She married John Johnson about 1814.

John and Mary lived in Tennessee when their daughter, Rebecca, was born in 1815.  They were still in Tennessee when their daughter, Mary (Laura Ann) Johnson was born in 1817.  Daughter Mariah (Between 1816 and 1820) was also born in Tennessee, as was son William (1825) and daughter, Elizabeth (about 1829).  Lucy was born in Illinois about 1832 as were Elijah (November 1834), Nancy J., James and Martin.

They were living in Gallatin County, Illinois, by 1839.

Sarah (my 1st cousin 3x removed) was the daughter of Martin and Teressa Catherine (Smith) Johnson.  Martin was the son of John Johnson and Mary Greer).  It is my understanding that Sarah first married William Dooley and had two sons, Jesse and William.
