Captain McCall And Alexander Cameron

An article about Captain McCall And Alexander Cameron on the website, All Things Liberty (excerpted below):

"Captain McCall was publicly instructed to lead a 33 man expedition into the Lower Villages of the Cherokee for the purpose of negotiating the return of property taken in recent raids against the colonists.  His true mission remained unknown in a sealed packet of orders from Williamson."

Charleston, South Carolina
"Correlative with the investment and capture of Charlestown [Charleston] was the plan to combine the Indians and royalists of the up country against the patriots and supporters of the new State government. In the invasion of South Carolina by the British, the fierce Cherokees thought they saw a favorable opportunity to overwhelm the frontiers and sweep away the settlers in a hurricane of slaughter. The British plan and the Indian ambition were, therefore, in full accord." [Source]

South Carolina

"To counteract these influences, the Council of Safety had sent Capt. William Freeman to meet some of the head men of the Cherokees on the frontier...the Indians had been seduced from their friendly relations...[and]...it was decided to capture and remove ...[Indian Agent Alexander Cameron] from the scene of his mischief making." [Ibid]

"That hazard was entrusted to Capt. James McCall of the Ninety-sixth district, with Capt. James Baskin and Ensign Patrick Calhoun as his associates. The party marched from the Cherokee Ford on the Savannah River, and after a six days trip encamped near a large town in the nation where a conference was entered into with the chiefs. While thus engaged, the little force was surprised by a party of Cherokee warriors, and in the course of the affray, Calhoun and three others were killed and Captain McCall was taken prisoner." [Ibid]

Captain Billy Bush

A Tree In Kentucky

An excerpt from  Genealogical memoranda of the Quisenberry family...:

"One of Thomas Burris's daughters, Frances Tandy Burris, married Captain 'Billy' Bush, who served with George Rogers Clark in the conquest of the northwest and founded the famous Bush Settlement in Clark county.  Other matters of interest concerning the Burris and Tandy families may be found in Appendix VII."

In this excerpt from The Kentuckians, Billy Bush was described as the messenger who brought important news.

A Respectful Look At Henry Dodge

"For two centuries the family of Tristram Dodge, who landed on Block Island (off Rhode Island) in 1661, prospered from its instinct of migration. Its trail winds throughout the land, marked by Indian wars, exploits in frontier settlements, and a decoration for Israel Dodge from General George Washington for heroic action in the Battle of Brandywine. The record gained new strength with Henry Dodge, born to Israel and his wife, Nancy Ann Hunter, six years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence."

Vincennes, Indiana (early settlement where Moses Henry lived)

"The date was October 12, 1782, and he was the first white child born in what is now Indiana. An Indian chief of the Piankeshaw, seeing the baby, threatened to kill him. But Moses Henry, a manufacturer of arms, in whose house Henry Dodge was born, saved him by telling the chief that the child and mother would not stay there but would soon leave for their home in Kentucky. In gratitude, Nancy Ann named her firstborn after their benefactor, Moses Henry.  Eight years later Israel left his wife, son, and six-year-old daughter at Bardstown (where he had built the first stone house and tavern) to seek adventure and fortune in the Spanish country, in what is now Missouri." Drove past the "Assassin's End" historical marker on Highway 301. John Wilkes Booth died in the Richard Garrett's barn near where the marker is now placed. The site, BoothieBarn, has more here.

See the escape route map.

Tracking An Assassin (Washington Post) provided points of interest regarding the route, including the Cox residence (see below):

On Mrs. Quisenberry's Farm

Source

"During the war the rebel government had established on Mrs. [Elizabeth Rousby] Quisenberry's farm their permanent signal station to communicate with other rebels in Maryland, and hold open their mail route to the North and Canada. The signal officers, as a rule, were genteel men, and they all thought highly of their hostess, who was then about fifty years old. They occupied the school-house, at least two of them did, and one of these was a Maryland gentleman named Thomas Harbin. This man was one of the original confidants of John Wilkes Booth in the scheme to abduct President Lincoln."

The excerpt above was taken from the Genealogical memoranda of the Quisenberry family and other families, including the names of Chenault, Cameron, Mullins, Burris, Tandy, Bush, Broomhall, Finkle, Rigg, and others (1897).

See this blog for several interesting pictures of Mrs. Quisenberry's farm and the surrounding area.

George Ash In Indiana

From the Vevay, Switzerland, Indiana, Centennial website:

George Ash, a former "captive" of the Shawnees, built Switzerland County's first brick house in 1798 and later operated a ferry across the river. Today, his home is one of Indiana's oldest extant houses.
See "A Darker View Of George Ash" blog post here.

"The Progress/Reveille account says the wife (erroneously called Ash's mother) was willing to accept George, but the father was not, because the settlers knew about George's participation in the raid in which Henry was killed."

See my blogpost, "Shawnee Captive George Ash, My Ancestress's Step-Child."  Note: George Ash's step-mother was my ancestress, Mrs. Arabella Anderson Ash.
