The high bank of Rock river...south fence while the Mississippi formed the north one... . Immediately west of, and following the west line of fence, was a well beaten and extensively traveled road, leading from Saukenuk to the Mississippi, or the island, where Fort Armstrong (built in 1816,  and named in honor of Gen. John Armstrong, then Secretary of War,) and the trading house of Col. George Davenport stood.  [Source]

From the Guide to Civil War Manuscript Collections at the Arkansas State Archives:

"Maria Florilla Flint Hamblen papers, 1821-1908... Maria Florilla Flint Hamblen was born in 1838 in Michigan. In 1850, the family moved to New York, and beginning in 1855, Maria attended Genesee College studying music and foreign languages."

"After teaching for a time, she visited her brother in New Orleans in December of 1865. He had been assigned to Forts Jackson and St. Phillips, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Hamblen. Maria married Hamblen in 1866. The couple moved to New York, then to Iowa, and then to Florida, where Samuel worked as a government surveyor. Then, in the late 1870s, they moved to Hot Springs. Maria taught music and was active in the Methodist Episcopal Church, Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, and Woman’s Christian Library Association. This collection includes an autobiography, letterbook, and scrapbook."

"The first quotation was the experience of W. A. Fast, now an attorney residing at Sedalia, Mo.: 'Much of my reminiscence of the Sultana disaster must be my own part in the affair, for each one was too busy saving himself to give much time or thought to his neighbors. I was sleeping on the top or hurricane deck, and within a few feet of the rear end. With me were five chums from my own town, Orange, Ashland County, O. Our heads were resting on the sloping side of a metallic life-boat when the steamer blew up. I feel a jerk and jar, some hot water falls on my face and hands, and I wake, and seemed among the first on foot in that quarter. In a moment all were on their feet and seemingly aware of what had happened. In a minute or two it seemed that a hundred men were tugging at the boat. It was thrown overboard, and after it, making a plunge of perhaps twenty feet into the dark water, went from a hundred to a hundred and fifty men. My chums followed that boat and lost their lives — at least I never saw or heard of them afterward.'" [Source]

Mayor Of Detroit, DeGarmo Jones

Was it a young DeGarmo Jones who participated in the War of 1812 as a drummer boy too?

This excerpt illustrates DeGarmo Jones doing business, as wealthy businessmen do:

"In the year 1841, the first mill was erected for working the gypsum deposits, by Warren Granger and Daniel Ball near the place where Plaster Creek crosses the old Grandville road (now Chicago Drive). The land was owned by Mr. Degarmo Jones of Detroit, who had secured 80 acres of this land before 1838, and these men paid Jones rent in plaster delivered by water at Detroit."

Past and Present of Dallas County, Iowa:

Sadastan Jones...is a native of Ohio where he was born October 5, 1840, a son of John and Maria [Duck] Jones, both of whom passed away in Indiana. They were the parents of nine children and the subject of this review, who was the fourth in order of birth, was left an orphan at the age of ten years. Sadastan Jones grew to manhood in Indiana, and in 1861 came to Dallas county, Iowa, purchasing a farm of forty acres, which he cultivated for two years. In 1864 Mr. Jones was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Coleman, who was born in Indiana, June 12, 1844, a daughter of John and Sarah (Hesser) Coleman, the former a native of Pennsylvania and the latter of Ohio.

Davenport And Chasing Aaron Burr

New Orleans

 When in 1807 Gen. Wilkinson sent a detachment of soldiers down to New Orleans to arrest Aaron Burr, late vice president, and his alleged associates on a charge of treason, Sergt. Davenport was put in command of the detail, but Burr escaped before the arrival of this detachment, surrendering himself to the civil authorities at Nachez.  Sergt. Davenport, however, succeeded in arresting Dr. Bollman and several others who were charged with being conspirators. Burr was tried and acquitted and the others were liberated [Source?]

From the story of John and Sarah (Hesser) Coleman found in their son-in-law's (Sadastan Jones) biography:

John Coleman [Jacob, Valentine, Valentine] came to Indiana [John and Sarah were married in LaPorte County, Indiana, in 1834] at a very early day. He was a carpenter by trade and built the first frame house in the city of Chicago. He also carried the mail from Laporte, Indiana, to Chicago on horseback and it will thus be seen that he took a prominent part in the very earliest development of what was then known as the far west. He participated in the Black Hawk war and subsequently removed to Nebraska where he passed away in 1891, at the venerable age of eighty-three years, while his wife's death occurred the following year.  "E.W. [Ebenezer] DAVIS retired; was born in the town of Sebago, Cumberland Co., Maine, Aug. 26, 1808; when 16 years old, went to Boston and vicinity, where he lived seven years attended Beverly Academy, in Massachusetts, two years and six months, removed then to Schenectady, NY, for six months went to Syracuse in 1837, where in the fall of 1838 he enlisted in the "Patriot War," was Captain of a company of patriots composed principally of salt boilers..." .

"...1841 when he went to Des Moines Co., Iowa. Mr. D. remained in Iowa where he was a farmer and a member of the Legislature until coming to Fond du Lac in August 1847."

"...he resided one year at Appleton where, with Dr. MC Darling and Amos A Lawrence, he built a mill which he sold and returned to Fond du Lac."

"He was married in Massachusetts to Lavina Brown, who died in 1833. He was married a second time at Milwaukee, in February 1853, to Emma B., daughter of Dr. John B. Audley, who came to Milwaukee in 1842; she was born at Newcastle under Lyme, England".

"Mrs. D. has two brothers and a sister at Nashotah and one brother keeps the Nagowicka Cottage near Pewaukec Lake; her father and mother, who was Eleanor Rubathan, were born in Staffordshire near Newcastle, England.  Mrs. Davis inherited some poetical genius and has written several articles of merit...".

William Washington Woods, the son of William and Keziah (Acklin*) Woods, married Patsy Houston.  "William Houston Woods, the son of Rev. William W. and Patsy (Houston) Woods, was born January 1, 1831, in Maryville, Tennessee... .  His mother was a first cousin of Gen. Sam Houston, of Texas fame."

*Keziah Acklin and my Elizabeth (Acklin) Hinds were sisters.


Sam Houston had a disastrous first marriage to Eliza Allen.  There is tangential connection to my family tree though Eliza's brother, who married a Trousdale:

 Eliza's brother, B. F. Allen, married Mary Louisa Trousdale, Governor Trousdale's daughter, and a relative of my ancestor, Mary "Polly" Trousdale.
