An item dated in January 1857:  "received of John Reno, Executor of the Estate of John Antoine Joseph Clemmence the summe of five hundred dollars bein the summe set out in his last Will and Testament for the church called St. Clemence [Clement] church in Warren Township County of Macomb State of Michigan said church being a Roman Catholique church on the road so called the Center line church."

Buried in the St. Clement Parish Cemetery in Center Line, Macomb County, Michigan, are Sibilla Becker, buried November 28, 1856, age 76 and Barabara  Ant (Furman), wife of Peter Ant.

Mrs. Pliny (Brittania Gordon) Power

The first we will name is Brittania Gordon Power [daughter of John and Sarah (Rathbone) Gordon], who was born in Berkshire Co., Mass., about the beginning of the present century.  Her mother was a first cousin of Commodore Perry, and it was understood in the family that her father was a second cousin of Lord Byron.  When she was a child her father moved with his family to Tioga Co., Pa. where she received a good education and grew up a handsome and attractive young lady. When 18 she was married to Dr. Pliny Power, then in good practice, but who, in 1836, concluded to try his fortune in Michigan, and he and Mrs. Power came and settled in Oxford, Oakland Co.  They had often reason to fear for their lives from the many semi-hostile Indians in the neighborhood.  The Doctor soon acquired a large practice, and Mrs. Power practiced the liberal hospitalities of their new home in Michigan.  She spent the winter of 1844 with the Doctor in Detroit, he being a member of the Legislature, and she added her share to the social amenities of the city.  In the spring of 1844 the Doctor moved to Lapeer and soon after to Utica, Mich., where he purchased a farm and settled down in a large practice.  Their home, under the management of Mrs. Power, was a favorite resort for their numerous friends and acquaintances.  The adventure of Mrs. Power and forty other ladies of Utica, in tearing down a ___alley and salon as a public nuisance is well remembered by the 'old inhabitants.'  In 1848 Dr. and Mrs. Power moved to Detroit, where they resided till their deaths.  Mrs. Power was for many years a consistent and exemplary member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Detroit.  She has been described as discreet, prudent, cheerful, interesting, dignified and intelligent, and in retaining, even in her advanced years, the graces and many of the attractions of her early days.  She died October 15, 1881.

Pliny Power was born in Vermont in 1798 and died in Detroit in 1861.

Obituary of Dr. Randolph S. Bancroft Of Almont, MI

ALMONT

Dr. R. S. Bancroft passed away very peacefully on Thursday evening after a lingering illness, aged 78 years. He had resided here with his sisters eleven years and was highly esteemed. His sons D. B. Bancroft of Detroit and Geo. Bancroft of Minnesota and nephew Rev. E. B. Bancroft of Flint were here to attend the funeral which occurred Sunday morning with masonic ceremonies.

Who Lived In The Bancroft-Stranahan House?

Randolph S. Bancroft married Nancy Manwaring, daughter of Adam & Susan Manwaring, on 11 May 1854 in Lapeer Co., Michigan. Randolph's brother, John O. Bancoft, married Huldah Richmond, daughter of Edward Richmond (one of my distant Richmond cousins). Randolph and his father, Daniel Bancroft, were listed here in a Frost family book. Randolph & Nancy (Manwaring) Bancroft's home in Romeo, Macomb Co., Michigan, is now an historical site (Bancroft-Stranahan Museum).

A War of 1812 Veteran Who Moved To Michigan

While browsing through the Major Index Pension List War of 1812 by Annie Walker Burns [Bell] while at the Allen County Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana, I noticed that the Andrus family who lived in the metro Detroit area. Even though I do not maintain a database of Macomb County, Michigan, residents, it's close enough to my Lapeer, Oakland, and Genesee areas to be of interest. Further research found that Nancy (Lamb) Andrus was a Backus descendant, as am I. Small world.
