Jean Baptiste BRICAULT dit LaMarche

Jean Baptiste BRICAULT dit LaMarche and Marie CHENIER, Parents Of MARIE BRICAU DITE LAMARCHE

Some historical background here.

...a soldier known by the name "LaMarche". At that time, each new recruit in the Army was given a "war name" and could never use his actual name. This practice was to be replaced eventually by the "roll number".  After three years, Iroquois called for peace and signed a treaty with the Governor.  ... 400 officers and soldiers decided to stay...including soldier LaMarche of the Dugue' Company.  His name was Jean Bricault.

Choiniere And Chouinard, Les Canadiens-Francais

De Cognieres commune du dep de la Haute-Saone, arr. de Vesoul

The town [Cognieres is part of the district of Vesoul in the department of Haute-Saone, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. As part of the cantonal redistribution of 2014 in France, the town is attached to the canton of Rioz. (Wikipedia)

De Chonas, commune du dep. de l'Isere, arr. de Vienne.  Vient du vieux francais choine, blanc, en parlant du pain.

Swinyer is the Anglicized version of one (or both) of the French names featured above.  Can't rule out Sweeney, Swinger, Swainard, etc.

There are DNA matches with Choiniere descendants, including one estimated to be my 2nd to 4th cousin and others who may be 3rd to 5th cousins.

Mary Staves And Her Family

*How do we know Mary was a Staves?  Can documentation (a will, deed, church record, etc.) be found?

John Staves and Abram Staves (presumably Mary Staves' brothers) were naturalized in Clinton County, New York.  John Staves stated that he was from Chambly, Quebec, and Abram Staves indicated that he was from the Province of Lower Canada (Quebec).  The 1840 document also stated that Abram was brought to the United States when he was a minor of either one or two years old.

An earlier blog post, A French-Canadian DNA Match, included my Staves ancestor, Joseph Jacquex Staves.  The name Bricault dit Lamarche may have been changed to Staves. There is a link to information about Jean Bricault dit Lamarche (in French) with a roughly translated version here.

*A link to Ancestry.com has Mary Staves (1787-1876) married to Mitchel Swinyer.
Also see Mitchel Swinyer's memorial at FindAGrave.

Update About A DNA Match

Corrections and an update to this blog post:

13 JANUARY 2015

A DNA Match

This is a match on my maternal line.  Curiously, there is also a mutual match* on my paternal [Cameron] line.

                          Peter Snay m. Sophia Swinyer
William H. Daniels m. Louisa Maria Snay
Fred Knapp m. Mary Daniels
Beulah Lenore Knapp m. Morrison Agnew
*Daughter [With Whom I  (my brother) Matched]

Peter Snay m. Sophia Swinyer
Mary Jane Snay m. David Swinyer
Sophia Jeannette Swinyer m. John Joseph Garrett
James Herschel Garrett m. Katherine I. Johnson
(Living Garrett) m. Richard N. Powers
Me (my brother)

Peter and Sophia Snay lived in upstate New York.

Because I was managing my brother's profile, his DNA was a proxy for me (mine had not been tested in January of 2015).  There was a DNA match on our maternal line (with two sisters) that confirmed the relationship found through traditional research methods.

Update and Correction: There was a DNA match, but it wasn't with my DNA.  Neither sister was on my list of matches at FTDNA!  Thank goodness my brother donated his DNA to the cause.
