...dated February 15, 1875. "To the Editor of the Christian Guardian. " My Dear Sir — " At the request of the family, I have prepared, and I send you herewith, a brief obituary notice of Mrs. Elizabeth Bowman Spohn, only child of the honoured and widely-known late Peter and Elizabeth Bowman, near the village of Ancaster, in the county of Wentworth.

The delicate state of my grandmother obliged him to remain at home, while nearly all that remained lirm to their allegiance left for the British army. He was surprised at night, while his wife was sick, by a party of rebels, and with his eldest son, a lad of sixteen years of age, was taken prisoner; his house pillaged of every article except the bed on which his sick wife lay, and that they stripped of all but one blanket. Half an hour after my grandfather was marched off, his youngest child was born. This was in November. There my grandmother was, with an infant babe and six children, at the commencement of winter, without any provisions, and only one blanket in the house. Their cattle and grain were all taken away.  My father, Peter Bowman, the eldest son at home, was only eleven years old. As the pillage was at night, he had neither coat nor shoes; he had to cut and draw his firewood half a mile on a hand-sleigh to keep his sick mother from freezing; this he did barefooted. The whole family would have perished had it not been for some friendly Indians that brought them provisions.

Text from the Combs Family (1658-1930):

Alexander and Fanny Clendennin) Trousdale:
*Mary (Polly) Trousdale had been born 6 July 1793 in Tennessee to Alexander and Fanny (Clendennin) Trousdale. Alexander Trousdale had been born in Lancaster (now Dauphin) County, Pennsylvania on 23 June 1766 and was taken as an infant by his parents to Orange (now Alamance) County, North Carolina, the birthplace of Fannie Clendennin. The Trousdale and Clendennin properties were close to each other, and many early records show the two families sometimes working and serving side by side. Thus it was certainly likely that Alexander and **Fannie, daughter of William and Mary Clendennin, had known each other while growing up; they married in 1790 and headed west.

*A connection identified in the Combs book; Thomas Combs married Sarah Anderson, who was the sister of my ancestress, Alice (Alsey) Anderson.  Their son, Jonathan Pettit Combs, married Icyvilla Dolan, daughter of Mary (Polly) Trousdale.

**Note Added: Fannie was the widow of John Clendenin when she married Alexander Trousdale (was she also the daughter of William and Mary Clendenin?).  Alexander and Fannie were my ancestors.

Excerpt From Hugh Heward's Journal

In a 1790 journal, fur trader Hugh Heward noted that the residence of Sans Craint or Sanscrant, a trader, was about 140 miles up the Huron from its mouth; about 50 miles further, there was an Indian village. Other American records place Sanscrainte not only in proximity to the Potawatomi of Huron, but also show that he interacted with them. In 1794-1795, Bad Bird, an Ottawa 11 chief from Michilimackinac (L'Arbre Croche,) and a Frenchman who lived at Detroit, Baptiste Sanscrainte, were employed by General Anthony Wayne to invite Indians to Greenville, Ohio, for treaty negotiations. In March 1795, these two men went with the trader McKenzie to Kalamazoo, to meet with a general rendevous of the Indians at Muskegon in the spring.  [Source]

William Trousdale In Florida

The regiment to which he belonged joined General Jackson early in November, 1814, and, on the 6th day of that month the army moved against Pensacola, Florida... . On the day following the town was stormed and taken. While the fight was progressing in the streets the advance of our troops was checked at one point by a gun which raked a street, dealing death in its ranks.  In this emergency, William Trousdale, with several other daring spirits, rushed rapidly forward in the face of the enemy's fire, drove the gunners from the deadly piece, captured it, and thus removed the obstacle which had stopped the progress of our men. ...the 2d regiment, under the command of Colonel Trousdale, advanced to attack the Indian and negro settlements in that vicinity. They found all the towns abandoned, and discovered large trails of the enemy leading to the east and northeast. A negro, captured in one of the houses, reported that they had fled to the Wahoo swamp. The Tennesseans burnt three large towns, which were built of hewn logs, and appeared to have been constructed during the last spring and summer.  (Source)

Sir : I had the honor, on the 10th inst., to inform you of my contemplated march to the Withlacoochie. 

On the evening before my arrival, Colonel Randall, the adjutant and inspector general, was ordered, with Major Upshan, of the Tennessee brigade,- to advance with the spies under command of Captains Lauderdale and Wilson, and the front guard under command of Colonel Trousdale, and select an encampment about four miles from the river. In the performance of this duty, they surprised a party of the enemy, killed ten warriors, and captured eleven women and children.

"After being mustered out, Lawler traveled to Washington... . Once back in the county he raised a second unit, an independent company of mounted troops that called themselves the 'Mamaluke Legion."'

"Lawler's company traveled by river again and boarded the steamers Fashion and Major Tompkins at Baton Rouge and proceeded to Vera Cruz. Upon arriving in Mexico, Lawler's company engaged in scouting duty for the Department of Tampico with the mission of harassing the Mexican guerillas and keeping open the road from the Gulf of Mexico to Mexico City. Sometime prior to Dec. 10, 1847, Lawler's men skirmished with Mexican cavalry at Horcasitas.  Lawler's company continued their activity for most of 1848, not returning home until the fall."

Lawler's Company of Dragoons (also known as the Third Independent Company of Illinois Volunteers) included Roark, David H., Private.

Samuel Burton-1725: Arabella was the daughter of Samuel Burton of Amelia County, Virginia.

Samuel was born in neighboring Henrico Co., Va., and sometimes was found recorded in Chesterfield Co., an offshoot of Henrico Co. He was the son of John Burton, of Henrico/Chesterfield County, in liaison with Judith Nunnally.   Bristol Parish births have the following entry:

"Samuel Burton son of Judith Nunsry born Aug 8,1725"

Footnotes:

Based on numerous other records too lengthy to detail here, not the least of which are Nunnally properties near John Burton, and later Amelia County records next to Samuel Burton showing Judith (Nunnally) Worsham responsible for Richard Nunnally debts, it appears that Judith Nunnally was probably the daughter of Richard Nunnally II and Sara Akin: page 27, Our Nunnally/Nunley Family by Jean Nunley Dennison, Sept 1997.

John Pershing, A Member Of The Lost Battalion

*Frederick Pershing (1724-1794) was a Huguenot from Alsace and immigrated to America in 1749. He moved to Western Pennsylvania in 1769 and settled on land in what is now Westmoreland County. *Ancestor of General John Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing

His [Frederick's] younger brother John joined him in shortly after he moved to Westmoreland. John was a member of Captain Stokely's Company during the Revolutionary War and was killed during the Lochry Expedition in 1781.   [Indiana Library/Archives, Pershing family papers S0842]

The article by another Pershing descendant, **Edgar J. Pershing, in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. XVI, Sept., 1928, No. 3, told the story of Lochry's Expedition in the Lost Battalion of the Revolutionary War, PA.  **Edgar J. Pershing also wrote The Pershing Family In America... .

John Pershing perished in the ambush of Lochry and his soldiers; he left no descendants.
