Beatrice And The Most Handsome Man In Flint

Beatrice Cameron and her friend Suzanne met "the most handsome man in Flint*" at a local fair some time before May 29, 1924, Beatrice's wedding day.

In 1923, Beatrice was a machine operator at the Marvel Carburetor Company and lived at 609 Warren Avenue in Flint, Michigan.  Beatrice's future husband, Ralph N. Powers, was an auto worker who lived on South Saginaw Street, right in the heart of the City of Flint,

When Beatrice was born on July 4, 1900, in Arenac County, Michigan, Ralph was almost four years old and living in Battle Creek.

*Ralph N. Powers - as related to me by his daughter, who quoted an in-law of Ralph's sister Cynthia June (Powers) Brown.

George Brooks' marriage to Clara Powers was April 19, 1882, in Lapeer County.  He was listed as working on the railroad. Both were living in Dryden, Michigan.  Rena Davis and Daniel C. Bacon, both of Dryden, Lapeer County, Michigan, were the witnesses.

In the 1894  State of Michigan Census taken in Lapeer County, George Brooks' birth year was listed as 1830; the marriage record indicated 1837. "Harriet's" [Clara?] birth year was 1865 whereas the marriage record listed Clara's birth year as 1858, which matched other documents for Clara.  The girls are Clara's daughters.

By November of 1896, Clara was still Mrs. Clara E. Brooks, though living in the adjacent county of Genesee.

The 1899 Flint City Directory included the following entry:  BROOKS, Clara E. (wid George F.), res 150(0) Fenton.

George Brooks' death record was not found in the 1897-1920 Michigan death records.

Clara (Powers) Brooks and Allen Sincerbeaux applied for a marriage license (which was uncompleted and crossed out, stating "am unable to make/use this license) on 23 Oct 1899, in Flint, Genesee Co., Michigan. When and where did they actually get married -- or did they? Was George Brooks still alive, making the license invalid?

Cornelia Brooks was listed as Allen Sincerbeaux's step-daughter, and "Carrie E. (Clara) as his wife in the 1900 census.

Lucy Brooks was living as a boarder in a household where Lola Sincerbeaux (Allen's daughter) was a servant in 1900.   In November of 1900 Lola Sincerbeaux married Clara's brother, John Powers.

Clara (Powers) Brooks Sincerbeaux's obituary indicated that she was survived by two daughters (Lucy and Cornelia).

"At the flats where the bridge* on the Fenton road spans the Thread creek all the lowlands are inundated, and last night three families were driven from their homes by the rapid rise of the water, the three houses being situated just northwest of the bridge, John Powers and his family occupied one, his father another and a family named McCartney the third.  They left last night when the water became too high, but this morning the houses were still surrounded with water."

Seeking Heirs From Canada To California

The Flint Journal (Flint, Michigan) published the following information:

"Mrs. James Scott of Galt, Ont., is seeking information relative to a half sister, Anna McGee, who was adopted by a family named Brown of Clio, 22 years ago, the girl then being 2 years old.  A half brother was adopted by a farmer in that neighborhood about the same time, but when 14 years old he ran away and returned to Canada.  A brother of Mrs. Scott recently died in California [probably Robert T. Smale], leaving some property, and an effort is being made to locate all the heirs." [Flint Journal, Published 1900-10-13, Page 4]

A Murdered Child In My Cousin's Family Tree

The murder came to my attention while browsing newspapers online. Little did I know that the child's mother was already in my family tree!

Evelyn/Eveline (Barnum) Hillier was the daughter of Joseph and Caroline (Pollock) Barnum and the granddaughter of Calvin and Evaline (Jennings) Barnum. My first cousins are also descendants of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Barnum.  Evelyn Barnum married Robert Hillier on August 8, 1908.

Robert E. Hillier, son of Leslie (or Wesley) and Mary (Deck) Hillier, age 20, killed his wife's child* in 1909 in Flint. One account of the murder indicated that a few months earlier Evelyn had filed an assault charge against her employer; was the baby Robert's child? Confession*and inquest* [*pdf files at GenealogyBank.com]

Cause of Death for two day old Joseph Hillier was listed as unknown on his death certificate, 13 January 1909, in Genesee County, Michigan.

Robert E. Hillier was sentenced to the prison at Ionia, Michigan:

David Foerch From Listowel

My great-granduncle's first wife, Lillian Cramer, married David Delton Foerch as her 3rd husband.  What could be found out about David and his parents, Andrew and Susannah (Butler) Foerch?

Date: 1911-07-20; Paper: Flint Journal, Page 9
Divorce proceedings - he's a resident of Listowel(l), Ontario, Canada, in July 1911 [ GenealogyBank.com]

In 1920, David Foerch was living with his parents, Andrew and Susan Foerch.  Susan, who was named as Susanna Butler on David's marriage record, was born in Canada.  Was she related to the Butlers of Butler's Rangers?

BTW:  How about those siblings' names:  Colonel Foerch and Admiral Foerch?

United States Census, 1920
name: David Foerch
residence: , Ingham, Michigan
estimated birth year: 1881
birthplace: Canada
relationship to head of household: Son
marital status: Divorced
Household Gender Age Birthplace
self Andrew Foerch M 64y Canada
wife Susan Foerch F 62y Canada
son David Foerch M 39y Canada
son Colonell Foerch M 19y Canada
son Admiral Foerch M 15y Canada

Andrew, Susan and Admiral Dewitt Foerch were still living in Lansing, Ingham Co., Michigan, in 1930.

What would a look at Listowel(l) Canada (the residence listed for David Foerch in the Genesee County, Michigan, Chancery notice in the Flint Journal) reveal?

Backtracking, David and his parents were found in the 1891 census taken in Listowel, Perth, Ontario, Canada.

1891 Ontario Census , Listowel, Perth
1   11  9   Foerch    Andrew   33
1   11  12  Foerch   David        8
1   11  11  Foerch   Lilley       11
1   11  14  Foerch   Lolo          3

1   11  15  Foerch   Ruby     11m
1    11  10  Foerch   Susan     30

The Foerch family was still living in Listowel in 1901.

After a Google search, the Olive Tree Genealogy Blog surfaced.  Lorine's Olive Tree blog has been my "go to" site for researching Ontario land records.  Susannah Butler Foerch was a member of Lorine's family tree.

In 1920 David D. Foerch (1883-1954) married Margaret Simmons (1888-1974).  They are buried in the DeWitt [Michigan] City Cemetery.

No Butler's Rangers connection....but then there was the Olive Tree.

How And Why I Started Researching My Great-Grand Uncle's 1st Wife's 3rd Husband

The twists and turns of a typical search or how I got from here to there!

As I was browsing posts in the Google Reader, the updated online databases at FamilySearch.org were mentioned.  Hmmm....time to check out the list.  The update that caught my eye was Illinois probate but it was too labor intensive at that late hour, so I landed on Minnesota instead (no, I wasn't playing Monopoly).  After finding a couple of miscellaneous items, I started searching for Ingeborg Peterson in Minnesota.  Ingeborg was married to my great granduncle, Harry Gilman Powers, as his 2nd wife.

Hmmm...perhaps it was time to search at GenealogyBank.com for information about Uncle Harry's first wife, Lillian Cramer*.  Issues of the Flint [Michigan] Journal newspaper are online there and browsing through issues of the Journal is one of my favorite pasttimes.  It was late and getting later, but what the heck.

Lillian, who married Harry G. Powers in 1898, married John Baird in 1901**.  Lillian wasn't done marrying yet.  On February 19, 1908, she married David Delton Foerch*** (whom she later divorced).  Foerch struck me as an interesting and fairly unusual surname.  David Foerch was born in Canada and his mother was a Butler; was there a connection to Butler's Rangers?  Inquiring minds want to know.

My search has taken me way beyond the parameters of the Powers genealogy, but has now piqued my interest.  Could I justify continuing with David Foerch because the Butlers might take me back to the Niagara Peninsula where my Powers family used to live?  Okay, I'll go with that.

Because of the links I found researching my great granduncle's first wife's 3rd husband (David Foerch), he and his family will be the featured on a separate blog post.
