(My apologies to whomever sent this to me; I've lost track of the source)
Grandma Katie's father, James Dudley Johnson was born July 14, 1862, in Harrisburg, Illinois. He died in Trumann, Poinsett, Arkansas, on August 9, 1932.
State Census: 1865
James (Sr.) is enumerated by name. There are 2 boys and 1 girl ages 10 and under and 1 male and 1 female between the ages of 20 and 30. James Dudley Johnson would have been one of the boys under the age of 10.
The first Federal census in which James appears. He is enumerated with his parents, James and Nancy A., siblings George W., Elvira E., Josephine and William L. They are in Township 9, Range 7, Saline County, Illinois.
James was living in Saline County, Illinois, with his parents, James and Nancy Johnson, as well as siblings George W., Elvira E., Josephine, William L., and Jacob G. Johnson.
James Dudley Johnson and Katie Rice were married September 28, 1887.
James D. Johnson was living with his wife, Kate E., and children Pearl, James E., Mable, Evert, and Blanch, in Cottage Grove Township, Saline County, Illinois.
James was a widower living with his children Mable, Evert, Blanch, George, Marie and Katie in Harrisburg, Illinois. Two year old Charles was living with them and enumerated as a son; however, I believe he may have been Charles Mason, son of Pearl (Johnson) Mason Logan. Baby daughter Ruth was not living with James and the other children.
Information from Katie Rice's niece:
"Kate had married James Johnson and the family called him Keith or Keet. Kate died after childbirth with Ruth. Mom (Ruby)...said they lived about 3 miles from them down the railroad tracks. They older boys, Evert and Jim, stayed at mom's a lot after Kate died. The older girls, who were in their teens, tried to keep the home together but couldn't cope with a newborn and Katie who was not three yet."
Living with James was his daughter Marie, age 16; they were enumerated as Johnston, rather than Johnson. He was widowed and living in Poinsett County, Arkansas.
James D. Johnson was living with his son Everett and Everett's family in Poinsett County, Arkansas. [Listed as "Divorced"]
