Backus Family Notes And Mayflower Ancestry

 The Genealogical Bulletin published BACKUS FAMILY NOTES, By Theron Royal Woodward, excerpted below:

According to the Cleveland Genealogy (Vol. 1) (Vol. 3). Timothy Backus, b. Canterbury, Conn., June 11, 1751 (son of John and Joanna); m., Feb. 14, 1776, Ruby Tracy, and had Lucy, b. Jan. 28, 1777, and four other children. The Timothy who m. Ruby Tracy and had the children named, was a son of Timothy, a brother of above John Backus.  The Cleveland Genealogy also says that Elisha Backus, b. June 18, 1756, (son of John and Joanna) m., Feb. 12, 1777, Betty Johnson, and had Betsey and Elisha. John and Joanna Backus had no son Elisha... 

It is important that these mistakes should be corrected, as the records shown in the Cleveland Genealogy give the descendants of Elisha and Timothy an erroneous Mayflower ancestry through Joanna Backus...

The births of the children of John and Joanna Backus appear on the town records of Canterbury, Conn., and on page 14, Old Families of Norwich, but all trace of this branch has been lost until recently [Cathy's Note - I'm descended from this Backus branch].
