Gateways to Michigan
Settling Michigan:
"The earliest gateway was by that of the St. Lawrence River and the lakes."
"The second was the Ohio gateway, the westerly end of trails beginning at Pittsburgh and leading to Marietta, and thence by the foot of Lake Erie...or along the Cumberland pike...".
