In 1782 Virginia, claiming title to the disputed Mississippi Valley by commission of Patrick Henry, Governor, [Israel Dodge] appointed his brother Col. John Dodge to command the Illinois country.
Israel became Lieutenant under him and was stationed at Kaskaskia. He had shortly before at Carlisle, Pa., married Anne Nancy Hunter. On a journey with his wife to Bardstown, Ky., they halted at the French Post of Vincennes, where their son Henry was born on October 12, 1782.
