Elizabeth McMillan, who married George B. Shepherd (biography below), is most likely the sister of R. N. (Robert Nathaniel) McMillan [ancestor of my Stainton relatives]. They were both born in Scotland and are enumerated together in the 1850 census in Franklin, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana.
The best find so far is the identity of Elizabeth McMillan's parents from her husband's biography [see below]: "He [George B. Shepherd] was married, March, 1853, to Miss Elizabeth McMillan, a daughter of Robert McMillan and Janet Douglas, native of Scotland, born in 1833 and died in 1882."

George B. Shepherd [of Franklin, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana] is a native of Massachusetts.... . "...[he] came to Louisiana from Massachusetts and engaged as a salesman... . After this he devoted his time to civil engineering, and in 1857 became editor of the Attakapas Register... . He was thus engaged until 1860, when he was appointed register of the State land office...until 1862, when he enlisted in the C. S. A. under General Miles, Louisiana Volunteers, in which command he served until the close of the war.
