Old Resident of Essex
Alexander Cameron, one of the most highly esteemed, most widely known and wealthiest men of Essex County, and the senior member of the legal firm of Cameron, Cleary and Sutherland (also a banker)...died Monday morning at his residence, corner of Church and Carlton streets in Toronto in the 65th year of his age.
Deceased was the son of Allan Cameron, a soldier in the 79th Highland regiment, and was born June 22, 1828, while the regiment was stationed in Ireland.
His mother was from Invernesshire, Scotland, and was a remarkably clever woman.
His father came with his family to Canada six years later, and was appointed to an office in the customs service at Amherstburg.
Mr. Cameron taught school...he went to Upper Canada College, Toronto...(also studied law)...
He entered the offices of his kinsman, Malcolm C. Cameron...
Mr. Cameron, in his early days, bought large tracts of land in Essex, Kent and Lambton....
...twice married; Medora Buell, a daughter of the late Andrew Buell, Master-in-Chancery, Osgoode Hall, by which union there were three children, A. B. Cameron, of the firm Cameron, Cameron and Crooks, Mrs. G. W. Torrance, of Montreal and Mrs. John Cartwright, of London, England. In 1876, Mrs. Cameron died, and in 1878 Mr. Cameron married Mrs. Ward, widow of the late Capt. E. B. Ward, of Detroit, the marriage of whose daughter to the late Prince de Caramon Chimay, of Belgium was an event... .
The father of deceased died at Amherstburg, as also did Mrs. Cameron, and a brother, Angus, and a sister Margaret. They are all buried in the Amherstburg cemetery, the last named dying less than two years ago.
Remains laid to rest in St. James Cemetery. The chief mourners were Alfred B. Cameron, a son, Thomas R. Lyon, of Chicago, a son-in-law, and George Torrance, another son-in-law. Among the floral tributes were an orchid wreath from Mrs. Cameron...Miss Katie Torrance... .
