Detroit  14th Sept. 1781

Dear Sir,

By letter from Captain McKee and Tomson [Thompson] dated 29th August 1781 Camp near the Ohio, we have the agreeable news of Captain Brant, having on the 26th ultimo, with about one hundred whites & Indians, taken fourteen Boats with troops provisions of a part of Colonel Clarks Army on their march from Fort Pitt to S. Dusky the whol amounting to one hundred and one. He, on this ocation [occasion] as usual, behaved with so much good generalship, that not one of the whole party escaped without the loss of a man on his side.

Colonel Lochry, Commandant of the party, six officers & thirty privates were killed in the action.  A Major Craigcraft, with eleven other officers of different ranks, & fifty-two private prisoners.  He is so particular in his return that he mentions the name & state/style of every person.

When the express left the camp, McKee and Thompson were pushing forward to join Brant with about seven hundred, who was then not more than three miles from the rear of Clark's Army, which the prisoners said did not exceed five hundred, and expected a reinforcement from Kentucky.

I communicate this intelligence to you because I think it will be pleasing to Sir John & you, and I hope it will make some amends for my not saying something to you before since my arrival here.

Mrs. Pfister is well & joins in best wishes to Sir Johns family & yours & that you believe me.

Your ___ friend and Humble Servant

John Macomb

Colonel Clause
