Finding Probate Files

The old-fashioned method of finding specific probate files in Wayne County, Michigan, started by finding the name of the person's whose estate was in probate, or an heir of the estate, or other persons with an interest in the said estate by using a set of alpha index cards with the Probate File Number in the upper right corner (I have viewed the cards at the Archives of Michigan; the example below was found on-line at FamilySearch.org).  Once the number was found, it was time to scroll through a new roll of on-line images until the needed probate file appeared (via FamilySearch).  This by-passed the need to view a file in person and/or spared the expense of ordering copies from the government entity that has custody of the file.

Now there is an easier way to find many of the probate files online.  In my case it's my local library.  The library subscribes to research databases, including HeritageQuest (now part of the Ancestry.com group).  HeritageQuest can be used from a remote location.  The file below (affiliated with the index card above) was found after a search of HeritageQuest's Michigan, Wills and Probate category.  The probate file can be viewed from the comfort of your own home.
