Norman's History of Cheltenham:
One [elm tree] near Swindon which is called Maude's Elm is said to be named from a beautiful and good maiden of the name of Maude who was killed under its branches by her wicked uncle and the tyrannical lord of the manor. For a long time it was given out that the poor girl had committed suicide and she was denied Christian burial... . ...her mother also was turned out her little cottage...[and] was accused of being a witch... . The vengeance of God, however, the tradition goes on to say, overtook the murderers and brought the innocence of these two poor women to light. [Source]
