Captain Jonathan Walker was a Massachusetts boy who went to sea.  He was incarcerated in Pensacola, Florida, at which time he was branded with the letters "S.S." [slave stealer].  Captain Walker settled in Muskegon, Michigan, and that is where he died.

From Michigan History, Volume 5:

Whittier has immortalized in verse the Man with the Branded Hand.
