General Greene's Purported Purpose

Anecdotes of the Revolutionary War in America...:
No spirit of moderation restrained the passions excited by what may be esteemed domestic conflicts nor abated the virulence betwixt contending powers which is the natural result of war.

The most distinguished patriots whose age and superior wisdom, were supposed to influence public sentiments, were arrested on frivolous pretexts and sent into exile. The young and active, impatiently waiting the hour of exchange, to resume their stations under the banners of their country, were crowded into prison ships as fit subjects of retaliation, should General Greene adhere to his purpose of avenging the murder of Colonel [Isaac] Hayne, by the execution of a British officer of equal rank.
