The father of the Comte children, Victor Comte, was a corporal in the 5th Michigan Cavalry who was killed in battle (date of death 11 May 1864) "at Meadow Bridge near Richmond, Virginia."
Affidavit by Horace W. Dodge, Captain of Co. C, 5th Cavalry; he was acquainted with Victor E. Comte, who, while engaged in a battle at Yellow Tavern near Richmond, Virginia, suffered a gunshot wound that caused his death [notarized in Hamilton County, Ohio]. He mustered in as a wagon maker.
Victor Comte, of Berne, Switzerland, son of Xavier Comte and Catherine Cortin?, and Elsie Barbier [could be Barbie], of Valen___, Department of Dombs, France, daughter of Frederick Barbier and Elizabeth Siegler, were married on August 6, 1853, at the French Presbyterian Church in Detroit,
Elsie resided at the corner of Riopelle and Lafayette streets in Detroit.
