Information found in the Excavation of Fort Michilimackinac...:
"In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, there were three successive major trading settlements in the Mackinac Straits area; first, at present day St. Ignace...then present day Mackinaw City, and finally, on Mackinac Island, but documents of the period seldom specify the exact location of the reference."
